Forged iron block

Hello,

Found this old forged iron block in a garage here in town. I am curious if anyone had any idea of what this might have been. It measures 4" wide by 5" high and 2" thick and it weighs 10 1/2 lbs. It is marked 1775 and has a hole in the back. Any thoughts? Thanks.

I don't really know, but just as a wild guess, how about maybe a dirt tamping/compacting tool, minus the handle.

Possibly a counterweight of some type...It looks like cast iron though not forged...that would be one heck of a chunk of iron to try to hammer forge into shape

Just an observation but the 1775 is not in mirror image so it was not intended to be used to imprint 1775 into anything or it would be backwards
