My Goodwill and Craigslist loot
« on: August 03, 2016, 08:08:22 PM »
Won a couple auctions and found a pair of Lodge grills on CL.

Overpaid for the cornstick pan at $7.xx after fees and what not but I just love using them.

The Dutch oven and tea kettle came in at the same price for the pair.  The Dutch oven appears to be a later Wagner with an Asian lid.

I got the Lodge #12 skillet with lid, the newer Wagner #6, and the hammered #5 I think skillet for about $31.xx. I think it was a little high, but I wanted a skillet for veggies bigger than my #10 lodge logic and I gambled a little on the hammered skillet.    The pattern looks like a Wagner maybe, but I see no writing on the underside.   Guess we will learn once it soaks.

My super exciting scores are the 2 Lodge grills.  $20.   FOR THE PAIR!!!   I am probably more excited than anyone else about those but I just think they are so dang neat.

Lodge Sportsman Grill

The draft gate is frozen up and won't move.   I suspect it will free up and come loose upon soaking and electrolysis.

Lodge Outpost Grill. The pin is frozen in this one as well but I think it will free up in the electro bath as well.

Thanks Jim.   I am pretty excited about it.   I am also waiting on a shipment from Pennsylvania that I "accidentally" won as well.   It has a couple Griswold skillets in it.  A Large Block EPU #3 and a small logo #9 I believe.   And a Lodge Logic #10 to replace my warped one.

I don't know thing one about them myself, but there's a write-up about Lodge Sportsman Grills like these in V12 N2 of the Casting Call newsletter, if you haven't already read it.

Never heard of it.   Is it available online or is that a members only thing?  I'd be interested in checking it out for sure if you have a link.   Thank you.  8-)

It is a Members only thing (the Casting Call Newsletter).  Available on the Members Side of the Forum (otherwise known as The Dark Side!)... Lots of great stuff on the Darkside of the Forum.  Catalogs, Newsletters, and our Foundry List!... which is quite extensive and will grow quite a bit when Winter arrives, as I have a LOT of material to upload, and pages to create.

Tommy,  you've become quite the zealot since you joined.  I can only tell you that you will benefit tremendously by joining WAGS and getting access to the Dark Side.  I joined WAGS before I even knew about the Forum so I never knew what I was missing.  You will make smarter purchases, you will learn better what to look for, how to cook better in your iron and so many other benefits I can't even list them.

Let me put it this way:  when I get my WAGS renewal notice I pay it the same day; and when my Casting Call arrives I read it right away.

As budget allows, I will join.   I look forward to it.  :)   I'd love.to make it to Grand Rapids this year since I have family there and it's where I'm from but I just don't think it's in the cards.

Work has begun on several of these pieces.  Here is the outpost grill after clean up.   After lots of thinking, I believe this one is just too rare to sell at this point in time.   Plus, I absolutely love it.   Now, do I use it or somehow display it?  Hmmm....

This guy cleaned up really nice too and the wife messed up and slipped.   She let out a "that's really neat" when she saw this piece.    She is coming around slowly but surely.  :)   It made some killer hash browns the other morning.

This one went into electro last night.    I absolutely cannot wait to get home and check it out tonight.   It was pretty rusty.  I think because it isn't anything really super special, I am going to get it cleaned up and then paint the outside with high heat paint since it will be stored outside and used a couple times a week.    Anyone have a spare cover laying around for cheap?  Or the best place to buy one?

Make sure the paint is for grills or ovens. Weber sells some in hardware stores for their grills. Some engine paints are not suitable to be used around food.

I seasoned my new one before I assemble it. No rust, spray with PAM on the grates before cooking, non stick surface.

Thanks for the heads up on the paint.  I'll compare.

Tommy, check the paints carefully.  I'm not sure any paint can handle the high heat of charcoal.

They are out there.  I am only going to paint the body of the grill.  Neither grate will be painted.   From what I have seen in my very brief readings, the main thing to watch is the curing process for the paint if they call for it.  Some of them call for several coats with curing times in the oven similar to seasoning.    I will do a little more intensive research on it and report back once I figure it out.    Thanks for all the input.

Picked up some normal Rustoleum BBQ grill paint tonight at wally world.   Gonna give that a whirl.  In the mean time, the crud is falling off the grill body.   I was able to separate the bottom.plate from the body last night and etank them separately.   I got the body pretty scrubbed up tonight, washed it, and dried in the oven.   I then tinkered with the tank a little bit this evening and got it to jump from 8-10A to 20A so I am going to put the body back in tomorrow and try and get the last few stubborn spots off of it.
