I'M NOT A BAILED GRIDDLE FAN BUT ...
« on: June 05, 2016, 05:52:38 PM »
a friend of mine bought this piece along with about 29 other pieces at a local auction that not many showed up for. I bought a hand full of pieces from him but missed the 13 block, spider, and a 2 block smoke ring.I ended up being able to get this piece, 1,2, and 3 Wapak sad irons, a 12 muffin pan with the sideways logo.and a Puritan Wheat stick. The cooking surface is stained but is smooth to the touch.

Hello Harry. I'm not too crazy about bailed griddles either. But I believe I'd have bought that too given the opportunity. I don't collect Scotch Bowls but I have some and recently I bought a Wagner Scotch Bowl and it had the label in it also. I think I'm just gonna throw the label away and clean the piece.

Speaking of them bailed griddles that Harry don't like but he buys them anyway. What's the largest Griswold bailed griddle anyone has ever seen?

Personally, a 16.  It was cracked, though.  Why, did they make bigger ones?

I think the 16 is the largest round bailed griddle. Now as far as width goes they made an 8  (and maybe a 9??) in the rectangular griddle with a factory bail. I've seen the 11 GRISWOLD'S ERIE rectangular griddle with a bail but it didn't come from the factory that way but maybe you could order it with a bail??

I don't know what the biggest round bail handled griddle that Griswold ever made. BUT, I do know they made a number eighteen in size. I say that because I have seen one.

A Bailed No. 18?  I know that they made an 18" Exportware griddle with side handles, but I've never heard of a bailed 18" before.  I don't recall ever seeing a listing for one in a catalog reprint anywhere, either.  Do you remember what the markings on it were like?

Hello Adam. No I don't recall what the markings were. But I know where it is. I'll ask my friend to take some pics and I will put them up here.

Well I was partly right and partly wrong. Adam I will defer to your better memory and knowledge here. Now I'm not exactly sure why this was made for export. Adam do you know where the export ware that Griswold made would be listed? Here is the number 18 Round Griddle that Adam is talking about in the number nine reply above.

At least two places that I know of.  Catalogue 40 is the first of those.  My copy is the blue cover David Smith reprint, not the thicker one that you're selling.  In the Smith version, Export Ware is listed on the very last page.  The side handled round griddles are offered in five sizes, 18 inch being the largest.  That section of the catalogue is called "South American Export," so at least that narrows it down to a continent.  The second place is an 1895 catalogue that I've seen referred to as "Catalogue -S."  I don't have a reprint of that one, but you might.  It's the Savery pattern purchase announcement catalogue. The only reason that I know about that is because of the article printed about these kinds of griddles that appeared in the "Kettles 'n Cookware" newsletter V11 N4.  That newsletter article shows a reproduction of the page from Catalogue -S that had the side handled griddles on it, though at that time they were only available in four sizes, with the 18 inch size MIA.

I've seen pictures of the 11-inch and the 12-inch versions, and I own a 14-inch.  I'd never seen the 18-inch version.  Nice picture; thanks for posting it.

Based on my limited knowledge about Griswold "South American Export Cooking Utensils," most of it was designed for and exported to Argentina. The few items of this line I have seen reside in collection of Sue and Larry Foxx. The Foxxes are not active on the Forum, but they have a nephew (widely known as Jim Fuchs) who is very active. Perhaps, we could convince Jim to post photos of some of their export items.

The copy of Catalogue 40 cited was produced by Dave Smith and it is by far the best of several produced but unfortunately it is not a reprint. It is, however, the least distorted of several facsimiles issued. General Catalogue No. 40 consists of a number of Bulletins. The title on the cover of each Bulletin is printed in red. The text in Bulletin A, "ERIE" ALUMINUM: Cast Hollow Ware," is in green ink. Unfortunately, the cover is the least faithfully reproduced. the original is black with silver text. Even the spider in a web on the back is silver on black. It is quite striking.

The 14-inch that I was talking about is shown on this page.  You have to scroll down, but it's still there.

John, Perry was selling an Erie Ware catalog marked GENERAL CATALOG NO. 40 with front cover silver on black and back cover silver spider and web on black. It has 108 pages if I counted correctly and I think it was made from an original Perry had bought. I don't know if all the colors are as you mention but there are section pages that lead off with a red page. In any case, if this is the catalog you reference it is absolutely beautiful with all pictures and print material being perfect.

I mention this catalog in case you haven't seen it and I guess Perry still has copies.

Thanks Harry. The copy Catalogue 40 that was cited in the original post is the one produced by Dave Smith (140pp). I have this copy and the one made Perry, but the details I cited are from an original catalogue I own. It also has 140 pages and contains Bulletins A, E, W, D, K and H.

Hello John. That original you have is certainly a nice one to have. The number 40 that I had reproduced is also from an original that I have.
