PT AP'D FOR Gem Pan - I Think
« on: May 28, 2016, 05:58:48 PM »
The only marking on this pan states, “PT. AP’D FOR” on one of the top handles. It’s a gem pan, at least I think, and an odd one at that, so I had to pick it up. For having 10 little feet on the bottom, it still does sit flat, and it is well cast. Each of the 10 cups is even ground on the inside. Anyone else have a pan like this or have any more information about it?

Is it for assaying?

Seems like we discussed a similar pan years ago and Tom N solved the mystery.  Hopefully he'll chime in here soon.

Hard boiled egg baker maybe?

Almost looks there might be little caps to put on each cup - there is a recessed lip.

I don't think assaying.  The assay pan came to a point to concentrate the metal pellet at the point.  This wouldn't do that terribly well.

Assay pans seem to be single use items. It doesn’t seem likely someone would grind the inside of every mold in each pan that was about to be destroyed. The recessed portion supporting a small lid is an interesting thought. I found patents for a couple of egg poachers that do have lids for each section. The feet on the bottom look to be an intentional part of the design. The bottom inside could just be that way due to the overall design.
I tried a patent search, I and couldn’t find anything assay or egg related, but that assumes the patent applied for was actually given. It looks like patent application scanning only started around 2001 on the website, so no luck searching for the application.
There are only 8 sections in a GF Filley egg baker, so it’s not that one. But having that dip in the bottom allows an egg to sit like a golf ball in a golf tee. The egg doesn’t move at all like it would if the bottom was merely concave. I think you are on to something Tom, thanks for the input.

Here are 2 of the egg poacher patents I came across while trying to find this pan:

I wasn't talking egg poacher, but egg baker instead.  Don't know if it might pop up that way.

The assay pan in that old thread was designed for multiple use.  Heavy, heavy, heavy.
