Slant Griswold with "ERIE" quotes or without question.
« on: October 17, 2014, 12:59:00 PM »
Hi All,
Sorry for the newbie question, but I want to make sure I get this right before I get in too deep.
I have been looking online for an answer to the Slant Griswold Slant/ERIE 1906-1912 series, some have the ERIE in quotes and some don't, is there a reason for this? Are they a different series?

Thanks in advance.

Mike

I would say that a slant logo pan with quotation marks around ERIE and a slant logo pan without quotation marks around ERIE aren't usually considered to be pans from two different series.  Slant ERIE is just all considered to be one run.  I've certainly never heard that the extra punctuation increases or decreases value.

Why was it that way?  Just speculation here, but I'll go ahead and make it.  The series immediately preceding the slant ERIE series chronologically was the "Griswold's "ERIE"" series.  Pans from that series have no logo, and it's the first series that had the word "Griswold" appearing on the pieces.  It's also sort of a transition series, I would say -- Griswold might have been trying to get their company name more closely associated with their products, which prior to that point had only said "ERIE," but  henceforth all said "Griswold" even if they said nothing else.  The "Griswold's "ERIE"" pans had quotation marks around the word "ERIE" all the time, and I would speculate that the slant ERIE pans that have quotation marks around the word ERIE are an earlier hold-over of that trend.

Thanks for the clarification Adam. Going to a yard sale tomorrow of a big collector in this area. This is just in time.

Hello all,
Went to the yard sale today and met the most interesting guy, 92 years old collecting Griswold for 26 years, I bought 4 items at his yard sale, then he invited me inside to see his collection he would like to sale as a whole, so if someone could loan me $55K I would be able to buy it  :).
He had every series, including the hardest one to find, such as #1 Slant Griswold "ERIE" which is listed as rare..

Pics to come as I figure out to resize them.

Mike, that is incredible.  You're new to collecting and have been to the mountaintop.  This man is obviously a good person to know.  I hope he gets his wish to sell his complete collection.  If, however, he doesn't, please let us know ;D

Hi Jim,
Yes it was pretty amazing for sure, he also took the time to teach me a few things such as how to tell the fakes from the real ones, where to look for some of his amazing fines, how to clean and restore etc. He has invited me over anytime I want so I am going to take him up on it.

Another funny part of the story is he will not let his wife cook with any of his Griswold collection, so she went out and bought some Wagner to cook his meals!  :D

That's quite a collection to 'bump into' Mike!  Lucky You~!

If he is computer savvy I'm sure he would be well received here in the WAGS group-!

No he isn't, but at 96 years old he gets around pretty good, they have been in the Griswold & Cast Iron Cookware Association for many years, but don't go any longer.
Here is another cool pic.

Nice collection. The # 1 is a really hard to find piece and you shell out some $ when one comes up for sale. I can think of at least eight of these I know of and I'm sure there are at least that many I don't know about, but in the millions of pans made that isn't very many.
