Hi I'm a newbie here and I was wondering if anyone can tell me if the old CI hot plates can be safely restored to working condition?  I would like to purchase one, and if you have any suggestions one what I should look for in an antique hot plate I would be mightly appreciative! :-/ thx, Lisa

Hi Lisa, they can and are restored.  They can also be converted over to propane or natural gas.  There are some members here that are very knowledgeable about these.  Did you have a specific model in mind.  They show up on ebay quite often.  There may be a member who has one for sale even.  You might post what you're looking for in the "Wanted" section.  Also, welcome to Wags. There are different regulators for propane bottles, and other variables that need to be determined by someone who is comfortable working with this type thing. It can be done, and I have done it, and it works well, but I don't feel comfortable in telling someone else how to do it. It's something that could not work right. For anyone who is not knowledgable about this, I think they should take it somewhere, like an LP gas place, and they will help you.

Lisa,

I just purchased one on Ebay myself. I was going to wait until it arrived to post my questions, but maybe we can both get some answers here. Mine is not a Griswold. It will be my first gas stove other than the side burner on a gas grill I used to own.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=360106430410

I have a friend who works for a propane company , and he is willing to inspect and or repair the stove to make sure it safe to use. Also he will decide the correct regulator for me. I want to use a standard 20 lb propane bottle, and he says the size and number of orifices in the burner will help determine the best regulator.

Assuming this all works out, my next step is to apply a finish. I was thinking about high temperature stove paint.  I don't know if this particular model is collectible or has much value. My main concern is how it looks and performs. What do most people use? Any recommendations on a finish?

If intending to Bid on E-Bay for one a few questions to ask are......Is there any cracks or breaks in the legs where they bolt onto the bottom of the stove? (They break there often). Are the grates removable and are they cracked or pieces broken off,(usually can see this in the pictures). Do the valves move freely and are they complete (sometimes the adjustable hoods if equiped are missing). Are the air shutters there and no holes rusted in them or bent or damaged. Most of these things you can see in a "Good" auction with clear pictures. The elevated ones are very nice for frequent use.   :)

Jesses modest, so I'll brag on him. He does an excellent job of restoring these old hot plates and stoves.  :)

Hi Lisa,
Hope you stay around a while. This is a really fun place. And you will not find another place were the accumulated knowledge of Cast Iron is any greater . Look around and think about joining. The cost of membership is trivial for what you recieve in Information.  :)

Jesse: Super nice hotplates you did a great job on them. How many Griswold hot plates you have? If I ever run on to one worth the money and in good shape I think I will buy it.

Jesse,

Do you have one set up in your house for daily use, or do you just restore them?

I have a 7033 set up down stairs (the dirty kitchen as some know it by). Thats a elevated 3 burner. I test fire most of them on natural gas when I'm done with them.
