Giant Collector
« on: January 29, 2015, 12:26:28 PM »
It looks like I am going to get a chance to see someone's giant collection of Griswold soon. A guy I know from a men's prison ministry's has an 87 yr old father who supposedly has a huge collection and has been giving pieces away to his family. It sounds like he hasn't collected in about 10 years so it will be interesting to see what he has.

From a recent antique store find I also found out about a huge collector that comes and buys out the stores Griswold every chance he gets but looks for mostly Pre-Griswold Erie pieces. (He missed the Erie Bread Stick pan I found because it was under some tools!! I bought it for half the asking price because my wife promised to bring him Jalapeno Poppers since his wife doesn't like spicy food.)  ;D The store owner said he might be able to introduce us. Supposedly this guy has 100's or 1000's of pieces that he decorates his huge log cabin with.

That's exactly what I'm planning ... and hopefully buying a piece or two from my friends dad. It sounds like he has a few oval dutch oven roasters. Man would I love to get one of those!!! Ya gotta love a good pot roast.

Better yet, if you could ask him if he would be interested in selling it all, lock, stock, and barrell. Let us know if it ain't too much trouble. That sounds like a wonderful collection for sure. And yes at the very least take pictures and share them with us if you would?  :)

You got someones attention with that sentence, Dave!  ;D
The love of a good pot roast is what led me to this site. But you don't have to have an oval roaster for that..any good sized DO will do the job. And yes, please take lots of pics!

Ok ... Ok ....

First: My wife makes a wonderful pot roast in our Griswold Chicken Pan.

Second: Now you two ... I only have so many pockets and my wife says they would know I stashed something in my back pockets because I don't have a butt.

Third: As far as trying to put in my coat ... it's 70 degrees instead of the normal below freezing. It would be a little suspicious.    ::)**Wondering if I can find an oversized Western Duster at the Stock show/Rodeo this week**

One is more than NONE! :P ;D
Now Dave, the fact that you have no butt actually works in our..er.. your..favor. More room for iron. Wear some baggy pants and fill 'em up and try not to clang too much when you leave. If he gets wise to it, just start runnin. You outta  be able to outrun a 87 year old man, right? Even with a couple #3 or 5 oval roasters in your pants..one for you and one for me, right? You can do it, Dave..I know you can... :-*

What about the #7 Cheryl? Don't you want one of them? I like Oval Roasters. I have several of them. In fact I bought a real old Wagner number nine here while back and its got a gatemarked lid.

OH, and talking about putting them oval roasters in your pants. You better put them on your back side. You might be able to outrun an 87 year old man, but I'll bet you can't outrun his gun. So everything covering your back side will be for all that shot he's probably gonna throwin at you.  ;D ;D ;D

I'm starting to hope he has a #10 rectangular griddle or larger if they make them that I can put in the back of my shirt.  :-/

Good thinkin..and if you see a #6 tite-top DO, it would make a good helmet. Don't forget the lid and trivet though...those are hard to come by.  ;D

Now that's good thinking ... butt(pun intended) even though I have no butt my wife says I have a big head so I'll carry the #6 and wear a #8 or #10.

Once again .. good thinking Mark. I already have a Griswold Chicken Pan #8 and a Hinged Griswold Double Skillet #8 that will work for pot roasts. I need something bigger and with a bail to hang on my tripod over campfires. Especially now that I figured out my Iron Mountain lid is sitting on a BSR bottom and they don't fit tight together. 10" top sitting on a 10 5/8" bottom ... no wonder the back of my SUV rattled so much on the way home from that auction.  >:( :( >:(

Be awful careful with valuable Iron and campfires.  :-/ I would buy a new Lodge for that..easily replaced.  ;)
