Erie Griddle
« on: May 13, 2014, 03:50:21 PM »
I found an "Erie" handled round CI griddle today for a couple dollars. Are these dated the same way as a skillet? Other than Erie in quotes, not much on it.

Looked a little more closely, there's an 8 on the handle, the Erie is in quotes and nothing else. Same sale, I got a Lodge 4 in 1 lid with the big triangle mark, an unmarked #10 Lodge Dutch oven with 3 notch heat ring, and unmarked #10 Lodge chicken fryer with 3 notch heat ring and lid, along with 2 cast iron register covers (never seen anything like them--they're not the square or rectangular flat ones, they're narrow and 3 dimensional-I'll post pics when I have more time), all for under $20.

Still like to date the Erie though--by the skillet rules, wouldn't this be a series 2? Guess I'll have to post pics--the handle is curved quite nicely.

With "ERIE" and 8 on the back, it would be dated between 1883 and 1905.  This is after the "Griswold and Selden" and just before "Griswold's ERIE".

I am no expert by any means, but I don't think the griddles had any different handle styles like the ERIE skillets did.

You say that the #8 is on the handle?

If it only has the number on the bottom of the handle and only "ERIE" on the bottom of the griddle, it is an early griddle, from 1883 to about 1891/2.

1891/2 was when they started putting the p/n on the griddles.  If yours is an 8, the pattern number would be 738.

If it has a pattern number, then it is between 1891/2 and 1905.

Here is mine, from between 1891/2 and 1905.

Skillets are confusing.... but I believe that they have been studied more, markings tracked and analyzed more closely.

Griddles and handled griddles.... well, IMO, they do not necessarily track the same path as the skillets.  So I am reluctant to assume such....
without volumes more information.   :)

The number 8 is on the handle; there's no part number on the bottom, only the word "Erie" in quotes. I'll try to post a picture in the next few days.

Gosh, I guess I got really lucky!
