Need some waffle info...
« on: April 21, 2014, 05:17:04 PM »
....our wafflemaker is starting to show its age and my wife mentioned looking to replace it soon...and was looking at one of those newer ones that rotate (Belgian waffle makers?)...

...now, seeing an opportunity when it comes, I told her that we could get a cast iron waffle maker...so my question is, I'm pretty sure the low bases are too short for use on gas stovetops, but what about the high base ones?  Are they high enough to actually use on gas ranges? This could open up a whole new direction for me as I nevr buy waffle irons since I usually just by stuff I am planning on using LOL

Actually, I think I may even have a waffle iron without a base that a guy threw in one time for $5...think it was a #7 Resor (or something like that)...if I can find it, would a base from one of the other manufacturers work?

Hi Ray,

Good to have you back. :)

I think you can use either height of base and it would work just fine. As long as you have the kind of waffle iron with a ball hinge and two handles, you can just lift the paddles up a little bit when you need to turn it.

Truth be told, you could even make waffles with no base at all just by placing it directly on the grate of a gas stove. It would not be the slickest outfit, but I bet with practice it would turn out waffles equal to any.

Dig out your waffle iron and measure it. I have a base here you can have if it will fit. I found it inside a dutch oven that I bought.

Wow, thanks Chris!  I will def dig it out this week (NHL playoffs so that takes priority for me LOL)...

...all I know for sure is it's somewhere in the garage LOL  Only reason I bought it was because the guy threw it in for $5 and I had never heard of the company before...so it piqued my interest...for $5 I couldn't resist...

.....just never got around to cleaning it (along with about 40 other pieces waiting to be cleaned LOL)

Ray,

The only Resor waffle irons I know of (OK, I had to go look at at the foundry list) did not have the straight handles on the paddles and are hinged in such a way that the two paddles do not separate without tools. This is not going to work on a base like I have.
I think this one is a Wagner. Low base, no notches for stop pins, and a squared resting notch on the handle end to hold it in place. The opening is a bit over 7 and one half inch across.

Post up some pics of your paddles whenever you find them. If mine won't work maybe someone else can help.
