Latest WI Addition
« on: May 27, 2009, 09:43:49 PM »
This one just arrived today. Had a little scare when I got out of my truck, and saw the corner had split out on the box. It got worse when there was this nice little USPS sticker on the top that read " Arrived Damaged at The Barto Post Office "  I opened it right away, expecting to find a handle broken off. Guess I got lucky, No Damage. I'm guessing it will clean up really well. I'll get pics posted when I'm done.

It's in the tank now. I might get to season it tomorrow afternoon. Depends when I get home from the auction.

That was lucky. I like those squares. I have 2 #7 WI's now. Going to give one of them a shot soon on the stove. I'll be dropping the other off to you for electro at some point. Keep saying I'm not collecting and don't need any more WI's but those squares are pretty cool. Can't wait to see it all done.

Ray,
Whenever your ready to drop it off, I'll get it done ASAP. The one paddle on that square is giving me fits, but it'll come off eventually. I've found that Wagners seem to be a little harder to clean, but they season up better in the end. The base, one paddle, and a couple of fives are in the oven right now. I had to take a break for a few minutes. I'll be getting back to that stubborn paddle in a few. I was hoping to have it done tonight, and have pics posted, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen.

Sorry about that Jerry. I honestly thought I would lose that one. I watched it jump in the last 15 seconds, and though a sniper would get me. I don't use sniping programs. I like the idea of changing my mind on my max bid at the last minute. I hate losing by a buck or two. I noticed the "MOULD" on this one also Jerry. I'll have to check my grammer dictionary to see if it's correct. Maybe it's a variation of the word. Spelling isn't one of my strong points. As for the heart star, I haven't won one yet. That one, and a #11 Griswold square are in my future. Of course another twin paddle, or even more paddles would be nice.

Jeff,
I'm actually on a weeks vacation right now. I've managed an auction every day this week so far. Of course the one I went to today, was for building materials. We needed some insulation for "The Shop". Got a great deal on 4 rolls of R-13.  ;D . No matter how hard I looked, I couldn't find any iron. Well there was this one old wood stove, but the last thing I need roght now, is another project.  ;D  The wife has been working all wee, so I've been flying solo.

As far as that crud? I gotta get back to that last paddle. I enjoy a challenge  ;)

Any suggestions on what to put on the wood handles. THey are pretty much raw wood at this point. I know polyurethane is out. Tung Oil maybe? Lookin' for a little help here.

Looks great!! Would mineral oil work in the handles?

Chuck, I've used Tru-Oil a lot on items like this, gun stocks and some furniture items.  Brings out the wood grain and it's pretty tuff.

Where would I find Tru-Oil? Also, is there a food grade mineral oil? I sent a PM to Greg Lappe about it. He's selling end grain cutting boards in the Items For Sale section, and I figured he may have some suggestions.
Keep the ideas coming. I want to see what comes out of this.

Not sure if there is such a thing as food grade or not, but I doubt it would be harmful regardless as you are not ingesting it...heck, baby oil is nothing more than mineral oil with fragrance...

Chuck.......The handles in the first pictures appear to be void of any color?  Do they show any wood color at all when they are wet?  If you wet a piece of wood with alchohol, water, or anything, it will show the color of the wood if you put a clear finish on them as they are.  The pictures in books look like they are light colored.  I dont know if thats from color fade over the years or not.  If they dont have a color you want,  I'd consider staining them first if you want a wood color.  Then apply a clear finish.  Tung Oil, or an oil finish of anykind is ok, but IMO, takes a long time to dry and is not as durable as some modern clear finishes. Its a matter of opinion, but I'd also use a satin finish product....a tough urethane floor finish, out side door finish, spar varnish, or a bartop finish.  The old finishes, varnishes and lacquers, back when that iron was made wont compare to the durability of modern finishes and by sight, no one can tell the difference, IMO.

PS......First time I've ever noticed the word Mould on a waffle iron.  Interesting!..especially in light of the spelling of mould versus mold.
