Wagner "Utility Griddle"
« on: September 23, 2007, 10:25:19 PM »
Has anyone encountered a Wagner "Utility Griddle"?  I found one a little while back and can't find mention of it in either the red or blue books.  Any idea on when it was made?

I would post some pictures, but I injured my back pretty severely (pain-wise, anyway) this afternoon and can't handle the griddle and camera angles.  It's a neat little griddle, a "long" griddle, with grease grooves along the side and a grease catcher corner, and bracing on the back in the shape of a full moon in the middle, with four braces -- one radiating to each corner.  It has the usual Wager Ware script logo and the words "UTILITY GRIDDLE" on the back.

Thanks.

Jerry, I've seen and had them but can't tell you when they were made.  Does it say "Made in USA" or does it have a 4 digit catalog number and marked SIDNEY?  They are a newer piece but maybe not really new.

Hey, Steve.  Sorry for the slow response -- been on my back in bed trying to not further irritate my crazy back.

The griddle has Sidney -O- on it and a catalog number of 1148 -- which shows to be a #8 "Long Griddle" in the red and blue books.  Possibly a reused number?  I guess I storied about the bottom of it -- instead of two lines running from the circle in the middle, it has three per end -- with one to each corner and one straight to the end.  Straight rectangular handles with a hole in only one them.  Approximately 10" X 17 1/2" from edge to edge, not counting the handles.  Nice little griddle.  I have 3 or 4 #8 griddles and every one of them are different sizes...

Thanks for replying.  When my back is better, I will take the griddle out in the sunlight and take a few pictures of it.  The lettering on the back is very sharp, but pretty shallow, so probably wouldn't make good pictures with a flash.

Steve -- or anyone else with this sort of knowledge -- I have a posting on the "The price is right" forum about a griddle I bought that I think might be Vollrath.  Would y'all please take a look and see what you think?

Thank you.

Howdy!
Jerry, here are a few pics of the WW Utility Griddle I have.
It's hard to see from the pictures, but it is marked 1148.

Either that Jerry or, very possibly, whoever did those catalog number lists didn't get the right name for the catalog number.  I don't know if Wagner's regular style long griddle was the same cat. # at one time.  I don't think these command much in the way of price and do see them around from time to time.  I would guess 50s would be the time period.  Oh, why can't we have access to all iron cookware catalogs?

Phillip, that's exactly the griddle!  Thank you for the pictures.

Steve, I appreciate the info.  It does look a little more "modern" than the other griddles I have.

It just occured to me that collecting cast iron and having a bad back might not be the best idea.  Need an assistant, I guess...

Thanks again.

Took the one I have to the convention in Tenn. Didn't sell ,I still have it. Almost packed it to take this year. These earlier grills are far nicer than the later ones.

One of the things I like about this little "grill" (been calling it a griddle, but it says "grill" on the bottom) is that it is a little wider than it is long compared to most other long griddles.  It should be pretty handy on one of my Coleman stoves for hamburgers.

I'll probably keep accumulating the griddles -- both round and long -- just something about them.

Jerry, sometime in the 40s or 50s Griswold changed the proportion of their long griddles to less long and more wide.  It's a very noticeable change especially if you see the two styles side by side.

That's good to know, Steve -- thanks. That's an item that will help when looking at griddles, to place and estimate age.
