"WAGNER" Skillet Lid
« on: December 31, 2006, 01:35:21 PM »
Happy New Year!   I am looking for pictures of what  the old, block letter WAGNER skillet lid looks like.  Are there any differences in WAGNER skillet lids?    Information and responses are appreciated.

Gary, do you mean the skillet lids that were made to fit the early Wagner skillets marked only "WAGNER" on the bottom?
You're out of luck; Wagner and other companies didn't start making covers for their skillets until the later teens or twenties at the earliest.  Any Wagner cover might fit but, when that pan was new, there were no cast iron covers made for it.  It wasn't until about 1925 that Griswold made its first skillet covers.

Well, I missed answering that question.  The most common covers are those like Gary T. posted and they probably came on the scene in the early 20's.  In the 30's the covers became smooth top with no writing there but had several indented rings around the top surface of the cover.  I don't know of any other variations other than the Wagner National skillet covers which are pretty much like the standard covers but for markings and size.   And then there are the aluminum skillet covers.  And the plated ones.

Thanks for the info-
Yes Steve, that is what I was wanting to know: what lid fits on the old block letter WAGNER skillets, and you have answered that.
There is another lid that I have seen with a shape of a little more of a curved dome on top, but I am guessing that fits a round roaster and it has WAGNER written on top.

Yes, that's a roaster cover from the early and mid teens.  I would think any Wagner No.8 cover except for a National cover would fit your skillet but don't know for shure.  Check the dimensions of your skillet with any later Wagner skillet; if the same, the cover should fit.

My lid, exactly like Gary T.'s, is a perfect fit for my #7 Wagner (arc) Sidney, O skillet, circa 1900-1915.

Which deep skillets do they fit on?  Marked or unmarked?

I think it's the early catalog 1088, 1089 and maybe a larger one, too.  Not certain about those numbers.  And I think the bottom of the skillets are marked "SKILLET ROASTER".  Anyone have one of these pans?  I used to have some but no more.
They are the nicest of the deep Wagner skillets I think.

Your numbers are correct Steve. 1088pan  lid is 1081,, 1089 pan, lid is 1082. There are a couple different style 1088s flared walls and straight walls. They would take different covers. 1081 will fit a regular #9 skillet the 1082 will fit reg. #10... My 1088 is smooth bottom have not seen one with H/R,, 1089 has a H/R have not seen one of them without one. Don't know of any skillets marked skillet roaster only the covers.

You are probably right about the skillets not being marked SKILLET ROASTER Ed.  I am going from memory and it was a long time ago that I sold my examples.  The proper bottom for the roaster cover has pouring lips unlike some or all of the later 1088 deep Wagner skillets.

Sandy, I'll get back to you on the skillet cover.  Have to figure out a price.  Gary M. you are next in line if Sandy doesn't take it.

Yes, I went thru a couple 1088s before I got the right one. The later 1088s have small pour lips, some have none, the lettering is smaller also. You 'll know when you have an early 1088, flared walls, large lips and letters.

Ed you are just have to come over at my house and show me what I have got and have not.(what fits what) I do have skillets that work with my #8 & #9 Skillet Roaster covers. Red book page #28 Thay might be a marriage.
I do have a Wagner 5 ringed (top) zig-zag (inside) 1070 1082 lid that fits a # 9 deep sk. or a # 10 regular. I like this idea, and it works great.

Hi Rob ,welcome to WAGS. That's a Chicago Hardware Foundry skillet cover. Don't look to be in the best of shape that an iron collector would be interested. It's in good enough shape to serve the purpose it was made for.
Yes the basting rings were cast with the breaks between them. circa mid 30s till I'm not sure ...    Steve S. whats the I'm not sure date.
