Look what Santa brought me!
« on: December 22, 2006, 10:33:22 PM »
It's all a mess! Heck, the dining room is a mess! I'm just glad my table is so sturdy. These pictures don't include the stove, some popover/gem pans, a few dampers and approx 10 grinders.

Then there is a small stack of broken stuff which includes an 11  HR large block  :'( These boxes look like they'd been used as toy blocks for King Kong. Mmmmmm, now I get deal with FedEx claims... GOODY!

OH! Another thought just occured to me... I've gotta CLEAN all this stuff! (swoooooooon). I am really quite pleased. The big skillets are all like new, mill marks very fresh (including the broken 11). The griddles are the same way! SWEET!

Ok... back to shuffling all this stuff around!

Nice haul Michelle.  Just how much iron did you buy and what are you going to do with all of it?  Inquiring minds want to know.  How on earth did Santa ever get that sleigh off the ground?

Michelle...........And what lottery was that that you won???????  Nice looking iron.  Somewhere in all those boxes, if you come across a #5 Flat Bottom Scotch Bowl that you'd be willing to part with (for a price of course), I'd be interested.  That's the last one I need to complete the set....#2 - #5.....p/n  837, 838, 839,& 840 page 76 in the Blue Book.

Happy cleaning,

Scott

Thanks Sandy.

It's approx 100 pieces in all. Approx 75 pieces are Griswold/Erie. I stumble across a gentleman, in Virginia, selling his collection. We talked for a while, he gave me a price, I countered and we had a deal.

He packed it all up for me (I paid for the packing materials). I think the damage I suffered was partially the packing job and partially FedEx but, that's just between us! As far as FedEx is going to know, it's all their fault!

What am I going to do with it? Well, right now I am kinda sitting here, looking at it and... wondering that same thing!  ;D First I am gonna look at and touch it all. Then I am going to inventory it all. Then I'll decide what I'm going to keep and what I'm going to sell.  I do know that I'll be selling all the big blocks, including the big block/hr 5, 11 (2 still unbroken), 12, and 14.

Then I have to clean it! EEEEEEEEEEEEK! I've alreayd decided to go with mineral oil on the pieces to be sold. I'm thinking it will save me some time and some gas (oven).

I'll admit... I'm a ll overwhelmed at the moment.

Sorry Scott, this is the only scotch bowl that came in this lot:

This baby is FINE! Marking are so clear and crisp. And the inside is dirty but, the mill marks are super fresh also!

That is really nice Michelle......but I don't know if I dare start on collecting another series of Scotch Bowls....tempting though.  Gotta ask......what is that thing that looks like it is sitting on the back of the table..looks like turkey or peacock tail feathers sticking up???  Is it a bookend or something like that??  Can't quite tell if it is on the table or just sticking up higer than the table.

Maybe there will be a #5 FB hiding in one of the other boxes....

Sorry Scott, there might be a toy skillet hiding in those boxes but, that would be about it.

What you see is the back of a dining chair, if you look in the fore ground you will see another one. The back are all slightly different but they all have that fan pattern. Hmmm... one these days I'm going to refinish those chairs and the table. Maybe after I clean all this iron? LOL

Scott,  I think that is the back of her chairs.   I had to look for a minute until my eyes got the depth.

Michelle, I think the mineral oil on the ones you are going to sell is a hot tip. In fact, If I was you, and they had a tad of rust on them, I would wash them in hot soapy water with dawn dishwashing liquid, use an sos pad on them, do a pretty good job that way, and then put on nice mineral oil with a good clean rag. If you want to go all out, I would suggest after getting them out of the wash and rinse, put them in the oven and get them warm and then put the mineral oil on. Just to see what I mean, I suggest this, take a piece and wash it and rinse it and then put mineral oil on it. Then take a piece and do the same except put in the oven and get it nice and warm and then put the mineral oil on it, if its too hot to handle, lay it on something where it won't hurt anything and then brush the mineral oil on with a paint brush, a big one for big areas and a small one for the nooks and crannies of say a waffle iron, then compare the two and you will see a world of difference. Try it, you'll like it.  ;) AND, when you take a picture of it for ebaby, it'll look like a million bucks.

Thanks Perry! You know I've been working on this for awhile but, it's a little hard to take it all in.

Time to sleep on it, I think. I spent all DAY waiting for the last four boxes to arrive. First one came at 8:30 am... the other 4 came at 9pm. Kind of a stressful day.

Night all!

Michelle, your husband must be very understanding LOL  ;D  I can see me telling my wife, hey I just bought a hundred more pieces of cast iron.  I'd wake up in the hospital and remember only hearing the thud of a skillet hitting my head.    [smiley=smash.gif]

Looks like you got some nice iron there.  As far as cleaning, I agree with Perry about the mineral oil.  It's amazing how well it does, and it will save you so much time.  I use a stainless steel choreboy and hot soapy water.  Just dry it real good and wipe on the mineral oil and wipe it off good and you're done.  Keep us posted on what you're going to sell.

Mineral oil has its place.  I don't happen to like it and for pieces I buy I much prefer vegetable oil which will come off with lye.  The mineral oil is more work and a bit messier to re-clean up.  Just a thought and an opposing view to the use of mineral oil.

I was a little surprised to read that the dirty pieces could be washed in hot soapy water and with an SOS pad.  Unless, someone is pulling someone's leg.   :-?

Steve, I've never had a problem removing it.  I don't heat the pieces.  I just put it on the clean dry iron, and it comes off with hot soapy water.  If you heat the iron and apply it or apply it when the iron is hot then it is difficult to remove.  It can be very humid here and it the best thing I've found to keep pieces from rusting that I don't plan to season.

The thing I don't like about vegetable oil is that it gets sticky over time and can get rancid.  I guess it's just a personal preference.

No Judy, nobodys pulling nobodys leg. Mineral oil works good. Its a matter of preference. As for me, I love it. Also, I will have to disagree with Roger in that mineral oil is difficult to remove after putting it on a hot/warm piece. My experience is that it comes off just as easy, remember, DAWN cuts grease and does an excellent job. The reason I warm a piece up before putting on mineral oil is because it makes it darker, thus better for show, instead of going to the trouble to season a piece to make it darker, that I will not be cooking with it. BUT, if I want to cook with it, I can wash the Dawn off and season the piece and its good to go.

Perry the ones that I've had trouble removing mineral oil from I think were basically seasoned with it at a high heat when I bought them.  The electro removed it no problem.  I don't use Dawn, but I wonder if maybe the detergent may make a difference.  I'll have to give Dawn a try and see if it makes a difference.

I heat the clean iron to darken and even the color after I clean it.  I've only used the mineral oil when it's cooled, so I haven't done it the way you do it.  I'll give it a try and see how it works.

Roger, I have heard that about mineral oil being better in a humid climate.  It's dry here so veggie oil works fine and probably best for me.  Solid crisco may get rancid in time but it holds up pretty well.

As for washing at Dawn, I am a late riser so Dusk works better for me to clean my iron.

I use to use vegetable oil. No way again. The only way I'd use it is to wipe on a piece that I was regularly using to cook with. That way it will not get sticky or rancid. But, if you use it on a piece, leave that piece lay for awhile, and then go back to it, its sticky to the touch and is yucky, and you talk about a job to get it off, you gotta sos pad it to get if off. As far as what detergent is best, there is a new detergent you may wish to try, its called Fug, if Dawn won't do, and Biz won't do it, Fug it.
