Will This Qualify as a SS Special Skillet?
« on: December 05, 2006, 07:12:25 PM »
Not sure if this  skillet will set Steve into fits of jealousy, but I think it is pretty neat piece.  That is a F on the bottom, and an eight on the top of the handle.  It is nice and light, narrow pour spouts.

Any speculation as to the foundry?

Will add some additional pix.

Ellis, I don't know who made those skillets, but they are nice. I have a 7,8,9,10,11, and 12 like that, no 6 but there is a six also.

Ellis, I don't know who made those skillets but they are ok.  Ok enough that I have three No.8s but no other sizes.  My handles are exactly the same but the humpy bump at the handle/bowl junction is different on mine.   Yours is more rounded/blended into the pan.  One of mine has not heat rim and there is a small "A" on top of the handle in front (bowl side) of the 8.  My other two have letters I and M respectively so you are an F-er while I'm an I-er and an M-er.

There are several styles of similiar skillets; maybe 3-5 different ones that plainly must come from different foundries.   Mostly I see these narrow lipped pans coming from in or near the midwest but I can't even speculate on the maker though I think Excelsior (Filley) is one of them but probably not on ours.  I'll see if I can get some photos of my pans here.

First one is the smoothie bottom with the "A" on handle.

Here is one of my pan's humpy bumps under the handle.  It is pretty pronounced and not as wide nor flared in as yours.

Lastly, an SS Super Special Skillet.  This kind gets my blood vaporizing like you wouldn't believe.  When I got this pan years ago it arrived with a crack right down the pouring lip.  Was I going to try for a claim or refund from the seller?  Haven't ever seen another.  It's a user for me and perhaps my oldest stovetop skillet c.1840??  About a size 7.

The bottom, the bottom, the very bottom with all its pits.  This pan is the pits.  I love it!

Oh so heavy (8-1/2 lbs.), so primitive, so useful (yes, another user), so lovely in all its primitiveness.  Just over 13" across the outer rim.  Lots of wear on the heat rim, lots of pitting on the bottom, lots of very smoothness on the cooking surface (yeah!) and lots of affection from me on this unrestored (but cleaned by the SS method to preserve the patina) pan.

And the cratered, crude bottom of the above pan.  A later version of this pan has a very sharp, pointed triangular pouring lip.  I got one from Shearylon and have seen one more like that.  These are SS Special Skillets- both fancy and crude but loveable.

Thanks for YOUR photos Ellis.

Thanks for the photos gentlemen, they're great! I Love those old gatemarked skillets. Wish I saw more of them.

Perry, here is a #6 I have.  It has a ton of grease build up on it, but here are some pics.

I used to have a #9 of those. It was a nicely balanced skillet.

I've got the #8 griddle.

Sorry about the bad picture, this was from the auction. I neglected to take a picture after I cleaned and before I took it to the deer lease.

WOW, Steve!  I am salivating after your pics of the SS Special skillet with that outstanding handle!   [smiley=yikes.gif]  Did you get that on ebay?  Any flaws on that piece are trumped by that handle. All the skillets shown on this thread are beautiful!  I like the older, cruder pieces.   Judy
