Danish Cookie Press
« on: October 16, 2006, 01:45:34 AM »
I recently aquired this and was told it was a Danish cookie press.  Has anyone seen one of these, or own one??  Is it, in fact, a Danish cookie press, or something else??  Is it supposed to have some type of base??  I'm thinking maybe not, because it seems to sit on three protrusions or legs when laying flat on either side.  Perhaps it layed flat on a stove top or in an oven to bake.  It has the letters A and F cast into the inside of both irons, and the number 14 scribed into each half.  Any ideas on the maker or country of origin??  I'll try to include photos using Photobucket....hope it works.  Thanks for any help.

Scott

I don't think it has anything to do with Danish cookies.  I think the seller thought so because the shape reminds one of those butter cookies you can buy in the tins.  They aren't made in a mold but instead are extruded into the various shapes.

It looks like a grillwork of some kind to me.  Maybe they were bolted on either side of a door and you could open them to talk.  Or maybe a little more silly use could be made by screwing one half on the wall and flip it down to set your cup on.

That is two old woodstove stoveback folding shelves connected back to back.  In the photo below the small shelves are above the stovetop and to either side of the center of the stove.  You can take the two apart and mount them on a wall to have two small, fold-down shelves.

Geez Steve, I wasn't that far off calling it a cup holder.  Thanks for the info.

Well, I'll be jiggered.  Thanks for the info.  Two of the three screws looked old and it looks like this piece has been screwed together for a long time.  I haven't tried to make cookies with this yet, but it does look like it would make quite a mess in the oven with the open grillwork pieces.  The two seperate stove shelves does make more sense.  Any ideas on the maker or the "A" and "F" on the inside???  Thanks again Tom and Steve....and here I thought I had found some kind of Scandanavian treasure that Tom didn't already have.  ;D

Thanks again,          Scott

PS........Clark,  yep, the beard and hair are real...all part of the "look".  Beard used to be a whole lot more red, not quite sure what happened there.  Now it's my turn to bug the kids.  Now instead of me telling them to get their hair cut...it's "come on Dad, when ya gonna get your hair cut"  I love it....paybacks are great.

No Scott, no idea of the AF on your piece.  I only just now saw that and thought it might be the initials of the stove maker.   Your piece is very much different than the shelves on the stove I pictured but I have seen others that are very different from that picture, too.  There were probably a ton of different style shelves and a stove dealer could probably tell you in an instant the make of stove it come off of.  What if it isn't what I said it was?  That's a possibility but I really do think I have it nailed.

Ummmm Steve? Did you recently post something about your cat shredding your arms? Do you think making him wear a fruit hat is going to help his disposition? ;D

(Steve's gonna smack me for this comment)

Nope, the "kitchen" is from a website for old stoves and the cat is from Google images.  I do have a silver persial that looks like him (and isn't the cat that bit me) but don't have a citrus hat for him yet.  What IS that green citrus anyway?  Too large for a lime.

Judy, you can see what my kitchen USED to look like on the back cover of the first volume of the L-W book on Griswold.  That was before I sold much of my collection.

Maria, maybe you have said, but what kind of stove is your "baby"? I can see its gas, mabe late 20's early 30's vintage.

It's a Detroit Vapor, and as best I have been able to research, it's from about 1934. In 1935, they moved the oven temp dial around to the front of the stove.

SWEET! Very nice, Maria. I love old stoves. Mine are more of the 40 -50's vintage. I wish my hands would heal up so I could get back to my restorations! Making me crazy having them just SIT there!

Oh, I wanted to add...I am looking for more of those CI stove "shelves". I've got a couple but, would like to get my hands on a few more. I am using them in my bay window as stands for my orchids. I want to continue that "theme" when we install a garden window in the kitchen.

If anyone knows where I can find some....
