Heat ring skillets may work on electric induction.

In a previous discussion, it was stated that skillets with a heat ring may not work on electric cooktops. I think this statement holds true with conventional electric cooktops, but may not with induction cooktops. These cooktops use a magnetic field to heat the skillet and not radiant heat. This magnetic field extends above the surface of the cooktop. I have one of these induction cooktops, so I decided to do a little experiment last night. I first put down a paper towel (yes paper) and then 3 plastic CD cases and then my #8 Wagner skillet. I turned on the burner and instantly the skillet started to heat. Within a few seconds the skillet was too hot to touch. At that point I turned off the burner to avoid melting the plastic from the heat being radiated from the skillet (not the burner). So, what are your thoughts and comments on this matter?

Julius, I do not think that it was said that skillets with a heat ring may not work on electric cooktops. I think what was said was that they may not work as well. And I do not agree with that at all. I have an electric stove with a glass top and use skillets with heat rings all the time with no problem. Also, my mother has an electric stove with the coils, she uses skillets with a heat ring on them and no problem. So I think the statements, or discussions, on how heat ringed skillets work on electric stoves is more opinion than anything. And, according to what you say, if I understand you correctly, and if I am not then straighten me out, about the convection type stove, and thats all new to me, it works there as well.

Hi Perry,

It is good to hear that electric cooktops do work for you on skillets with heat rings. I was happy to find out that my skillet would heat up fast from 5/8" above my cooktop. That will make more skillet options available. For example, those large TM Griswold's and Erie's with heat rings look nice.

Does anyone else out there have a magnetic induction cooktop or have any experience with this type of cooktop? Does anyone else use skillets with heat rings on a glass top electric?

I have electric coiled stove top but by Dec15, will have 5 gas burners on a new cooktop, if the remodel timeline remains.

Good luck on the kitchen remodel Greg. I am just finishing a kitchen remodel myself. Progress was slow at times and it was frustrating at times, but well worth it.

Well we have everything ready and picked out the granite (2 slabs) and all the colors, flooring,, tiles, etc. to match the granite.  This past week, the granite was moved to the fabricator and they smashed the one slab.

Guess what, those are the only slabs on the east coast and there are none coming in.  We had to redo the entire granite choice and that meant redoing the colors.  What a mess it has been and we have not even started....

My kitchen remodel problems were mainly related to my cabinet manufacturer. Many cabinets were built wrong and had to be remade. Some were the wrong dimensions. Some were damaged. It all worked out in the end though.

I remodeled Peggy's kitchen four years ago and did it all myself.  When the cabinets arrived I went to work and didnt have to worry about people showing up or screwing up on the installation.  She wanted granite also, but settled for me doing ceramic tile on the counter top.
Save MUCHO  $$$$$$ doing it all myself.

  You already picked your granite but in hindsight I would recommend you take a step back when you look at the color. Ours looked just like we wanted it when you looked at it up close but when they brought it to install it is much darker than we thought. I went back and looked at the sample and it's right on when you don't look up close. It still looks good but is much darker than we thought it would be.
