Wagner #8 W/I
« on: August 26, 2005, 03:11:08 PM »
Anyone have an idea of what the wooden handles on a #8 Wagner W/I should look like?  The only other markings is a patent date of 1910.  The current handles are very finely finished, apprx. 3 inches long, with a apprx one inch brass ferule.  No nail set for setting the handle to the W/I.

I don't or didn't see any reference or picture of this item in the red book or the 4th edition.  The wooden handles do not match any of the wooden handles pictured.

Thanks, Ellis

The correct wooden handles for the 1910 iron look just like this photo Ellis.  When new they had a highly varnished natural finish with the nickel plated ferrule.   The 1892 patent Wagner irons may have a different wood handle.   I recall them having a much shorter ferrule but may be mistaken.

Steve,
Many thanks for the picture.  The handles do not match however.

Individual is asking $65 for it, and I left an offer of $40.

Am I in the ball park anyone?

Thanks, Ellis

Ellis, I see these on ebay quite a bit.  I would not pay that much, as you can get one with the correct handles for $20 plus shipping or so.  If you keep your eyes peeled. :o

IMO, if you get them to $40 thats not bad. At least you can examine it first hand ,and judge the condition for yourself. On ebay you're taking the sellers word on it's condition. His idea of good shape and yours may differ greatly. Then shipping cost, and a hope and prayer it arrives in good condition. If it arrives damaged then thats just more headaches. I have a nice set of WW paddles (real cheap) like Steve shows. Anyone have a base we could hook Ellis right up. The only complete extra W/I I have is a Good Health #8.

Thanks Ed,

The W/I does have a bailed handle low base, but is so gunked up that I was not able to see if there are any marks on it.  The paddles are in dire need of cleaning as well.  I have not heard from him about the offer,  but will probably buy it (at the offer price if accepted) even with the issues regarding the handles.  I may try to get a picture of it today or tomorrow.

Thanks all,
Ellis

Well, I bought it, and now have to eat some crow.  It is the same as the picture, nickle ferules, and handles that match, down to the number of grooves, 2/3.

I will blame my fading vision and memory, and stress caused by Perry, as the reasons for not describing the W/I correctly the first time [smiley=shrug.gif]

Steve,thanks again for the pix.

Cheers, Ellis

Glad it worked out for you Ellis.  I bought a square one like that last year and couldn't figure out how to clean it until Marty told me the handles unscrew. Sure enough they did.  LOL   ;D

Yeah, ats it Ellis, blame it on me. My Dad used to say any excuse is better'n none.

Also, I alway shyed away from them wooden handle waffle irons, just because of cleaning them. Let us know how they came off for you. I hear people on here talking about pulling this nail out and that pin out ect. don't break it and all that and its got me gunshy on them. I like the coil handles but for this very reason have stayed away from wooden handles. I got a couple three but have cleaned them with SOS pads and elbow grease, and then did not season them, only dressed them down in mineral oil, they don't look bad, but they'd look nicer seasoned black.

I wouldn't remove a handle with ferrules like this one. Clamp it just below the ferrule and suspend it with wire to keep the ferrule out of the soup. These are hard to get out and hard to tighten back up to IMO. Some styles have a small brads/nails that are easy to remove and replace. Then season them in the base on the stove. Just use it a few times with Pam and it'll turn black.

Griswold waffle irons with wood handles have the handles held in place with a small wire nail.  Take a pair of diagonal cutters and get under the head and pry the nail out.  Very easy and very easy to replace.  If you make new wood handles for missing ones you can cut down a wire nail to the right length, sharpen the ends and pound them into the new wood handle.  Very easy and duplicates the original almost exactly if not exactly.   It helps to have an original handle and wire nail for comparison when making the new parts.

The ferules are loose and rotate, but the wood handles are 'tighter n tick'.  Short of placing in a vise and useing vise grips, think I will follow the advice on hanging them in the solution.

Thanks to all for the information and advice.
