Julie Gadgets just brought this out of the museum. I think it might say Enterprise Mfg. Co on the bottom. Any help? Janice

Janice, I think its neat too, but don't know much about them. I'd say if it was Enterprise it would be clearly written on it. At the first convention somebody had a whole slew of tobacco cutters. You could cut everybody there (ladies too of course) a plug of tobacco and not use the same one twice he had so many. Er, it seemed like it anyway.

Julie and I saw this in the new blue book. Maybe not this exact one though. It says Star and looks like this one though. That is what I wanted to know-did Griswold make one and Enterprise make one?

Yes, Enterprise made one. Griswold also made them, and in different styles. In the blue book is the 1883 patent information for one of the types made by Griswold. From what I can see and understand, again from the blue book, is that Griswold made the Star brand that you have pictured.

I thought too it looked just like the one in the book but underneath it says Enterprise Mfg. Co. I will wait for Steve to make a comment here. He usually knows what is going on. Janice

Julie, Your Star tobacco cutter was more than likely made by Griswold for them. I can't tell from your picture but if you look on the handle and see a number "2500", I would bet it is Griswold. It should also say "The Griswold Mfg. Co" on the bottom and have part #2494-S, although a few that I have seen do not have Griswold marked on them, only the part numbers. If these numbers are not present I would then say Enterprise or maybe Reading Hardware Co., but more than likely Enterprise.

Janice, I would say a plausible explanation would be that the Star brand was made by Griswold and that the Star brand was also made by Enterprise, different manufacturers for the same product, thus you have a Star made by Enterprise, as opposed to a Star made by Griswold. Also, its killin me and I been tryin to read it, and I have my neck craned, and I have turned my computer screen upside down, but all to no avail, BUT, what the heck does it say on the foot of your tobacco cutter. The print is away and thus backwards in the picture, but what does it say? Thanks.

It says Save the Tags on the base. I am going to empty the wagons today and we had better not find more cast iron because Janice has emptied her soup. Julie

Ed, that link is interesting but I wonder why they would want you to save the tags? Do you think they thought someday the tags would be collectibles or what? We're talking a hundred years ago, but were they collectibles back then too?

I really don't know Perry. Maybe they were like green stamps save so many get a free plug. Or did they re-use them? Some more googleing may turn up something. Someone here surely knows, please speak up.

Not always do I know. Tobacco cutters aren't cookware so I can't tell you anything new about them. I like Perry's scenario where both Griswold and Enterprise both made the STAR cutters. It might be like Puritan being made for Sears by both Griswold and Favorite but during different years. I think I have seen many more Enterprise cutters than Griswold and used to check the bottoms of the cutters trying to find a Griswold.

Steve, I also found a Star cutter at the flea market today. Turned it over and, Griswold. It came home after he told us the price. :o He didn't know the value at all.

I was at a shop last week in north Alabama and they had two star tobacoo cutters there and one had the griswold on the bottom and the right numbers on it while the other one just had the 2500 on the handle and the patern # on the bottom.
