What is this??
« on: July 25, 2005, 11:53:21 AM »
Hi,
I'm an old cook, have cooked with cast iron for years, but have just recently gotten into trying to collect the Griswald and Wagner cast iron.
At a pawn shop the other day I bought a 5qt kettle, on the bottom it says
           Wagner's
             1891
            Original
  Cast Iron Cookware

seasoning instuctions
1
2
3
4
ready for use - reseason as necessary

        5 QT DUTCH OVEN
          MADE IN USA

I didn't find it in the book on Griswald and Wagner I have so was wondering.

                   Thanks, Jan     :)

THe 1891's are pretty recent and marked the 100th anniversary. They were made in the 1990's at the plant in Sidney Oh.

You should try half.com if you are curious about Griswold and Wagner. Do a search for griswold smith and you will get a small result including  The Book of Wagner and Griswold: Martin, Lodge, Vollrath, Exelcior. Try and get the 2001 Edition of the red book. You can get a used copy delivered for under $12 and it is a  good guide to get you started. They also take credit cards.

The blue book has just had a updated issue released. Greg has availible for sale it is a little under $30 with shipping. Or you can get it for a little more than Greg is charging but your total will be less if you have a Barnes and Noble close by after July 28. I think they are getting around $24.

I would get the older copy of the red book to start you out. Because if you like it and want another book the Blue book will release July 28 to the general public, or Greg has copies for sale today.

So I recomend the old copy of the red book to get you started. But if you can afford it the Blue book will just be releasing in a new updated copy. And will be more accurate on it's price quotes etc...

Yes, Greg has the New Blue Book, but Barnes and Noble's website says they are scheduled to get it the 28th. I haven't verified that in a store. Greg has it for sale cheaper than Barnes and Noble. But since he has to pay for shipping he has to charge for shipping.  I was just trying to get out there that if you have a large retailer close by you could perhaps save a few bucks by going to them, otherwise if you live in the boonies Greg will get it to you cheaply as well. Knowing Greg I suspect he is selling it at cost or near cost. So I am not trying to offend you Greg. I just did a little checking around and wanted to report what I ran across.

By the way this was the copy of the red book I was useing... I coulndn't figure out why it didn't have the same info everybody elses was refering to.  It reminded me of trying to figure out what everbody else was looking at with my first edition textbook when the rest of the class had the 7th edition...

This book isn't even by the same Authors...
