Puritan, Good Health, Merit, Iron Mountain...
« on: July 13, 2005, 01:20:25 AM »
I'm thinking of starting collections of other non-standard griswold items, specifically, a full set of "good health" and possibly Merit and Puritan.  I've got a pretty good collection of Iron Mountain going, having just purchased an Iron Mountain handled griddle off of e-bay last week to go with my 3-10 skillets, chicken fryer, and dutch oven (still need a 12 and a 14 skillet to round out the set.)

The information on "good health" in the blue book is on pages 24 and 25 (3rd edition) but it is a little sparse.  It looks like the following numbers are in the back of the book:

620 is the #8 griddle, 621 is the #9
653 is the #3 skillet, 656 is the #6, 658 is the #7, 658 is the #8, 659 is the #9, and 664 is the #14.

I don't see any other numbers, the question is, where are the dutch ovens mentioned on page 25, in the 1931 price list graphic?  The long griddles?  the other skillets?  Was there a #4 made?  Can I just fill in the sequence numbers to get the other items?  How common are these?

Thanks,

Alan

p.s. If I'm looking to collect Puritan, was all of it made by Griswold or was some of it made by Piqua?  How do you tell the difference?

That's an easy one Alan.  ALL Griswold made Puritan have a pattern number while NO Favorite made Puritan does.  Favorite made pieces LOOK like Favorite pieces and the Griswold Puritan mostly looks like Griswold.  The Griswold Puritan skillets have a very distinctive handle that the Favorite Puritan doesn't.

Well Steve,

That figures, the Puritan I already have is Piqua then.  Thanks for the pointer, it's useful.  Guess it's time to buy the Blue Book in 4th edition and see if they have additional pattern numbers listed.

I'll collect the good health set first.  Any idea how common these job lot brands are?

I've been collecting for several years and only just last week came into posession of my Iron Mountain griddle, still haven't seen a size 12 or 14...  I already have a 3, 6, 8 skillet and 9 griddle in GH, but I'm a little concerned it might take a long long time to build a complete set...

Hey Alen,

I too collect the off brands of Griswold.   I have a #8 Good Health DO.   She was heavly rusted and built up on the bottom.   When found I could barly make out anything.   But I saw it.   And I knew it had to come home.

I also have a #7 Iron Mountain DO.   I have a spare lid for this size DO too.

(653 is the #3 skillet, 656 is the #6, 658 is the #7, 658 is the #8, 659 is the #9, and 664 is the #14. )

657 is a #7 skillet.   I have one.  I think you just miss typed.

Will see what else I have.

Alan, Other than the Iron Mountain skillets in many sizes I think you will find most of the other "non-Griswold" pieces made by Griswold are fairly hard to find.  John Myers also knows a lot about these pieces.
