New find Griswold Waffle in the PNW
« on: January 04, 2015, 01:40:59 PM »
Hello from the great Pacific Northwest.
Just picked up a nice Griswold 885 886 Waffle iron.  Has a low ring marked Griswold 8 on top and 975-B on bottom.  Also did these originally come Enameled? this has some enameling on the underside of the web handle.
It is heavily crusted but should clean up nice.  Anyone have a aprox. date as to manufacture?

The Waffle Iron Bases were Japanned, not enameled per se...
If you are seeing Black, that would be japanning.

The bases of most Waffle irons... most of the japanning is severely compromised, so I generally remove the remnants... lye bath will help remove it... and then again, sometimes not... ::) ::)

Old japanning remnants can sometimes present a real challenge.... that may require the Zip Strip and/or the auto detailing pick set...

Cherl you hit it on the head. That is what I am seeing on the back of the handle.
Need to set up a new bath have 20-30 pieces that need cleaning.
