Here is what may be a Favorite or Chicago Hardware Foundry chicken fryer with the cover marked 8-1/2

Here is a cover marked 8-1/2

The FAVORITE PIQUA WARE (smily logo) chicken fryer I bought last weekend is a size 8-1/2 on the skillet and 9 on the cover.  Any ideas of why John's covers are marked 8-1/2 and mine is marked 9?    My skillet measures 11" across the outside of the top of the pan not including the lips.

Steve I have the one same as yours. I have seen these in different markings and I don't have a clue on these. It seems to me that this was about the time that Favorite went  out and Chicago Howe Foundry took over. I have seen them marked CHF also and diamond marked. Where the lettered ones fit in (in the diamond) I don't know. I think there was some overlap of these three for some reason. This is just a thought but it could explain some of this. I haven't seen to many of these and the only one that I could identify is the Griswold Puritan cover which was marked by No#. Did Favorite also make these covers unmarked (without the No#)which was their habit. Also Steve is your pan with the Favorite markings look like insert and not part of the casting? Mine is, just another thing that makes me wonder what is going on with these?

Unlike Griswold who kept the top diameter of their skillets the same size whether they were regular or deep I think Favorite made their deep skillets a little bigger at the top. So if you have a #8 1/2 lid it will fit a deep #8 and #9 lid will fit a deep #8 1/2. I think I only have one deep Favorite  left right now and it's buried so I can't confirm right now.

If they marked the chicken skillet 8-1/2, only makes sense the lid should correspond to the skillet. The 9 would go with regular 9 skillet. A person not knowing a 9 lid  would fit the 8-1/2  skillet ain't gonna buy it. They think they need the 8-1/2.
Both the marked CHF and diamond with an "A" deep skillets I have measure 11" OD. There is a difference in handle style. Don't have smiley Favorite or I just can't find it.

Mark, my pan is like yours but not quite so pronounced.  Griswold would engrave thier markings in the pattern but Favorite may have attached the smiley logo to the pattern.  It is cast with the pan.  My cover is marked 9B.  (with the dot after the B).  I think Favorite only marked their covers with the size number and not No. number.

Jeff,  Griswold's deep skillets prior to the block TM pans (ERIE through EPU) were flared out just like this Favorite one and Griswold skillet covers will not fit unless by accident where a larger size might fit a smaller skillet (I haven't checked).  That was before there were any Griswold skillet covers.  My assumption is that Griswold narrowed up the tops of the deep skillets so that a regular skillet cover would fit both regular and extra deep skillets.  I used to use a smiley marked Favorite skillet cover on my Griswold deep skillet- fit perfectly.  Can't remember the sizes of each though.

Ed, could it be that since the top of the Favorite deep skillet is wider than their No.8 regular skillet that they sized it at 8-1/2 instead of 8?.   It's strange that what look to be two identical covers would be marked both 8-1/2 and the other one 9.  I think the sizes we have are all the same but the marked number is different.

Sure thats the reason. The 8 1/2 deep skillet is flared thats why 9 cover fits it. Still if you have a skillet marked 8 1/2  you should have a cover that says 8 1/2. Some folks don't know 8 1/2 is the same size as the 9 and smaller than the 8. The 9 cover would also fit the 9 regular skillet.

Steve, the only deep pans I have are the block and small logos so that is what I was basing my statement on. Thanks for the info on the earlier deep pans.

My cover is marked only 9A and the deep skillet 8 1/2A. It also measures 11 inches across, outside measurements. Also tried the cover on #9 smily logo regular skillet and it fits perfectly.
