Tite top dutch oven -  baster
« on: August 12, 2007, 12:25:13 PM »
This has probably been discussed before,  but my brain is dead.   What is the difference between the dutch oven and a baster???    Besides the words.   I just don't see a difference.

I think the basters are older, Griswold anyway. I know the tops and bottoms interchange. I don't think there is any difference other than the words.

The basters and early dutch ovens are the same with the same low cover.  Later Dutch ovens have the higher dome cover and the latest of the dos with all the writing on the cover did away with the gating on the lower sides of the pot.  I think the name BASTER was used initially to advertise that the dos had the new basting rings in the cover.  Had any company had any type of drip basters before?  I don't think so.  Maybe the name BASTER was not so well received by the housewives who had probably known these pots as DUTCH OVENS for some time and preferred that name so Griswold switched from Baster to Dutch Oven.

Thanks Cecil and Marvin.   The baster I just got was a #8  low dome slant writing in the cover and on the bottom.   Don't know if I had it or not,  but $30  I couldn't pass it up.
