Purchase at Auction
« on: July 24, 2005, 08:56:59 AM »
Julie and I went to an auction last night. We bought all the cast iron that was there for $55. I really wanted the two little skillets. In order to buy them we had to get a lot we did not need. The Griswold griddle has a chip but I guess it will still work. The one little skillet is painted. I am hoping it will clean up in the soup. I don't know anything about the big tray or the item to the far right. The #8 skillet is a Wagner and the smaller one must be generic. Janice

Janice and Julie,  nice looking stuff.   But I have to ask,  what brand is the griddle with the wood handle??

Wish I could find some stuff like that.

I don't think it is even cast iron. Just a light metal of some kind. On the back it merely says 10 in. Janice

I haven't had a chance to buy any books yet. I will when I get done with the sale. I thought the two little skillets were cute and I am hoping the painted one is a Griswold. I thought I could faintly see the logo under the paint. Since the cookware that I have is pretty generic I would like to add some Wagner and Griswold. Thanks for the identification. Janice

I did get the paint off the #3 Griswold skillet. It has the large logo. How old would that be? Is the small logo older? Is there a lid available for this skillet? Janice

YEap there are lids for the Griswold #3 skillets.  The cheapest is the high dome plain top at about $200.  Next is the high dome with the button logo at about $400-500.  Then there is the low dome no writing at about $300-500, then the low dome full writing about about $400-600.

#3 lids are not cheap, LOL.  I have an extra high dome no writing version.

Now that I am done gasping, I will reply. We got two #3's one is a Wagner and the other a Griswold. The Griswold has the large logo with a flat bottom. Julie wondered if the Griswold lid would fit the Wagner. I think we will wrap a piece of cardboard in aluminum foil. I will keep my eyes open and maybe those prices haven't hit the Dakotas yet. Maybe the lids never got here because I sure haven't seen any. Janice

If you want just a user lid try and find a  corningware lid that will fit on it. The skillet wont care if the lid originally fit on a piece of ceramic bakeware. Some sizes are a litle off so you are going to want to take a ruler with you when you go hunting and know what size you need. I have a few pans that I have married close, but some of the lids I thought would fit ended up being a little off. Or you could try finding a sauce pan lid to fit it. I know, not as cool as a C.I. but  I would prefer not to part with the few bucks needed to pay for a real lid.

Some later C.I. was even sold with corningware lids you will see some marked Griswold even, But these are not highly collected. At least not at the moment.
