cooking with bought cast iron
« on: January 28, 2015, 09:11:38 PM »
a lot of sellers say, e tanked, lye tanked, and seasoned 3 times. would anyone buy a pan, get it in the mail and use it right away without seasoning it themselves? doesn't everybody season it to their own preference before using?

I don't cook in my cast iron but I think you would have to be nuts to cook in an "as received piece" unless you really, really, REALLY know the seller as in some of the folks on here.

If my pan comes from Chuck Rogers, yup....
Or a few other folks that I know...

Otherwise, dip & strip is in order.... 'cause I have deep seated 'trust' issues...  ;D ;D

Yes I agree with Harry and Cheryl here. As they say, 'you can't be too careful'.

When I started buying cast iron, I used pans seasoned by others if the seasoning looked fine.  Now I find I enjoy seasoning pans myself so I do the whole strip & re-season thing.

There has only been 2 that I didn't strip and season myself. One was a #6 Griswold skillet I got from Cheryl. The other was a Gris waffle iron that had no crud, no rust, nothing but a very nice seasoning that I didn't think I could improve on. Waffles jump right out of it. Plus, it was a waffle iron... ;)
