Griswold #10 Genuine?
« on: September 16, 2014, 12:37:06 PM »
Hi

This is my first time posting here.  I started falling in love with cast iron by using one.  I have a #6 Griswold skillet that I purchased on ebay years back (can't recall exact date).  Back then my original interest was to find something nonstick that wasn't a teflon pan.  I have to say this pan is very nice and beautiful piece.  I use it everyday and for that it's become my favorite piece in my kitchen and I want more.  Sometimes food sticks and sometimes it doesn't.  So I've been on a quest to learn more about proper care of these pieces of gem.

Back then I also purchased a dutch oven #10.  It was listed as a Griswold piece.  I have not used it much though because I had not realized how HUGE it was and heavy.  Now I do some weight lifting as exercise so that's a non-issue.  Anyhow I love my #6 skillet so much that I pulled out my dutch oven from storage and the intent is to use it.  Upon inspection it has some rust so I'm working on "curing" it by spraying an oven cleaner on it and letting it sit in a plastic bag.  I've also noted the markings on this piece.  Lately I've been shopping for another cast iron pan larger than the #6 so I've taken notice of the logos and such.  I've also been reading a lot and that's how I came across this forum and read about some fake pieces.  My dutch oven doesn't have the familiar logo on the bottom of the dutch oven that most Griswold pieces have so it left me wondering if I have the real thing or a fake piece.  I have attached some pictures.  Can someone with experience tell me what you think?  It says ERIE on the top...very faded and the #10 on the opposite end of the Erie markings.  I don't see any other markings.  It seems to have a fire ring?....The lid does look like an original Griswold piece.

Thank you...

Here's a picture of the lid...I think the pictures may be too small.  I attempted to resize them by emailing them to myself through the phone.  If better pictures are needed I can try to mess with resizing again.

You have a marriage of sorts.... Both pieces are made by Griswold, but the ERIE kettle is much older than the marked cover you have with it.
