Need help IDing - some recent finds
« on: April 29, 2014, 09:52:16 AM »
It's been a long time since I haven't been able to ID something.  I have a lid and a skillet/griddle that I can't ID.  My educated guess on both is some sort of Lodge, but Lodge is one that I am not well versed on.
The handle on this lid is throwing me off.  I have not been able to find another one that looks like it, but it was the drip spots similar to Lodge.

Here is the skillet/griddle.  I don't even know what to call it!  My guess would be newer Lodge.  There is a slight lip all around the edge, this is not a flat, round griddle.

And I scored this Iron Mountain dutch oven, but I may need to set up electrolysis to clean this one.  Not sure if my lye bath, vinegar soak method will touch this one!

Hi Colleen,

That lid does look Lodge-ish under neath, but asian on the top side. I think I have seen a lid handle like that on an item marked Taiwan.

I was hoping you wouldn't say the "A" word (asian).  Oh well, it came with a BSR skillet so I'm not out too much!  I knew they didn't belong together, but figured I could ID it eventually!

It may not be a collectable item, but I'm sure if it were cleaned up and seasoned it could be put into service. It should work fine.

Does anyone know what that second piece is?

Looks like a #8 "old style" Lodge round griddle made before 1965.

Thank you Russell!  It's good to put my ID skills to work.  I assume it's the handle style how you ID this or just knowing Lodge's line of pieces?

I'm not so sure it's a Lodge. It has an outer heat ring, something Lodge wasn't known to do. Maybe a pre-Lodge Blacklock?

I also agree with Russell, Lodge "Old Style" griddle.

They also produced a "New Style" griddle.

Both griddles appear to have been produced over a very long period of time, including up to current times. :)

If you look at the catalog PDF's here and have seen these items 'out in the wild,' they are easy to spot. I would've picked that one up for sure.

Yes.  It was sort of a no-brainer at $3.99 at the thrift store.  I was just surprised I could not find another one like it searching all over the internet.  It doesn't help that even the newer Lodge ones don't show the underside of these type of griddles, so I couldn't be certain about what it was.

Now to either start a new lye bath or think about an electrolysis set-up......

And here is an item being discussed/disputed on the WAGS Facebook page... because of the placement of the number 8....  ;D

Now wouldn't it be a wonderful world if all those old catalogs that we peruse showed the  TOP and BOTTOMS of the pans, instead of the TOP views only...  ;D ;D

The 8 is a different font on mine, also....   The saga continues!

Here is a #9 “new style” griddle with the same era markings as your #8 “old style.” It was a $4 deal I couldn’t pass up, and the griddle is in use as I type.

Hard to pass up much of anything at $4! Same price that I paid for mine. Is this the new style because of the handle?  Still learning Lodge.  And I had to dump my lye bath due to getting a crack in my rubbermaid bin this spring, but so far it's been giving me luck in finding iron.  I've never had as much of a backlog!  So as much as it's killing me to not have a lye bath to clean everything up, I seem to be finding lots right now and don't want to ruin the streak!!

From what I understand, the "old style" had a heat ring that was sized to fit different stove eyes. The "new style" was made to sit on top of the cooking surface.
