Giswold Waffle Iron help
« on: November 18, 2007, 08:34:28 PM »
Hi all

I aquired a Griswold Waffle Iron at Auction yesterday  while looking for  Coleman Lanterns (main hobby)And I was wondering if any could tell me any thing about it.

Stamped on one side is

Pat June 29 1880
No 8
889

On the other side is

Griswold Mfg Co
The American Erie PA

Hopefully some on can me some thing about it.  Or if it has any value.
I 'm pretty sure the Handles are not orginal.
I had to clean a pile gunk of it  (seasoning)  just to be able to read the writting.

I will attach pics
But it seems I can only attach per post.   If any one want s more I will post them
Thanks Matthew

Matthew, can you post a pic zoomed out a little where it shows the hinge and handles?  Mike

Thats a nice old waffle iron, OH MIKE, what kind of hinge does this waffle iron have? This must be waffle iron week, show us your waffle irons?

Mathew, that is a nice old waffle iron. And welcome to WAGS. I'd say the value of it is around in the 50.00 to 60.00 area, if it has no cracks, or chips, or stuff like that and no pitting.

I agree with Perry.   Not often I do ::)   And,  those handles might be original.  Lots of the older irons have stub handles like those.   I would say it is about 100 years old.

Matthew, as you can tell it by the patent it was after 1880 and not for sure when the next patent change was. I think maybe 1885 or 1901.  The patent change was in the hinge. So it is old.  The 8/9 was the most common size so many were made and it is not rare but not real common in good condition.  Value??  I've seen them sell for $30 on up on eBay.  Hard to put a value on some items.  Yours looks to be in very good condition.  Mike

Perry, that is a 'button hinge'.  I think it is after the 'scissor hinge' and before the 'finger hinge'. :)  But I do reserve the right to be corrected!!  Mike

Dang Will, I thought I had it down. guess not.  Scissor, button, finger, acorn, ball 1, and ball 2.  I'll have to check this one out. :-/  Mike

Edit-- Will I believe you are correct--  The scissor was much later than the button and finger.  Book shows it on a 1920's Victor W/I. Mike

Thanks Guys I really Apreciate it.

The Corker is I got it for all of $7 certanly worth it even if it was not valuable.

As for condition  it has-had a very very heavy coat of seasoning on it It the lettering is still full of it.   Orginally the out side was just just a big lump of seasoning it looks like it was in use for it's entire life as the itron still had a good coat of resonably fresh oil on the inside when I got it. There is  no rust, pitting or cracks on the iron itself.  Base has some superficial pitting but no cracks. I assume the pitting would be normal for being used as long as it was  Where the hinge sits the Base ring also has a heavy coat of seasoning.I assume from Oils and greases leaking out the back during cooking So the Ring may be free of pitting there.

Those are nice, old waffle irons.  In addition to the No. 8, they also made them in No. 7 (7&8) and No. 9 (9&10).  Has anyone see any other sizes?

All this hinge business is a tad confusing. I do like the botton hinge though, acutally all the old hinges. The scissor hinge, does it come apart, in other words can you hold one paddle in each hand at arms length? You can't the button hinge, its fixed together. The reason I ask this is because, in the blue book, where the waffle iron hinges are all in a circle, you see the scissor hinge, and it looks to me, like it has a pin or little rod going from one paddle into the next, which makes me ask the question.

Perry,  the scissor hinge does not come apart.   It is pinned together.

All those waffle irons,  and you don't have a scissor hinge???

Oh yeah, I got some like that Will, I just didn't know they were called scissor hinge, I thought the scissor hinge was something else.  :-/
