Ed and Rob,
The hammered cover is just as illlustrated in a 1940-41 Sears catalog but not the 1940 or 1942-43 catalogs which appear to be Wagner made items.  I do believe that it was made by Chicago Hardware Foundry which bought the old Favorite patterns when Favorite went bankrupt in 1933 or 34.  The deeply hammered pieces were Sears top of the line- their "Best Made" grade.  Second line (Merit) was also hammered and appears exactly the same in the catalog but I suspect it may have been the less deeply hammered pans that are very similiar to the deep ones.  The top of the line were "triple ground" while the Merit pans were "double ground".  Not sure exatly what the differences ended up being but the catalog says "finer, closer grained iron than Merit".  Why I think the Merit pans were the less deeply hammered pieces is that there is Merit #3 skillet but no Best Made #3 and there is no deeply hammered #3 but there is a less deeply hammered #3.
The other pieces were made in both Best Made and Merit.  Do not confuse the names Best Made and Merit with Griswold produced items for Sears with those names.  Both names were tradenames owned by Sears.  The hammered pieces did not carry any names on them, tradename or otherwise.

Over on the dark side of the forum I posted a topic wondering if a chart in the Casting Call re: lids that fit which skillets...Ed, Clark, Steve --I don't have the info myself for this endeavor, and would need others to send me the info and I would build a chart. Interested? If not, then it's on to another idea!

Steve, don't you consider these deep hammered skillets? I think they are Chicago Hardware Foundry. Just asking because earlier in the post you said they didn't make a #3 deep hammered skillet?

Mark, I was only going by what the Sears catalog listed.  That IS a deeply hammered version.  I can't say if I've seen a 3 before or not.  They are not all over the globe for certain.  A full set of these would be awesome.  I love how black they restore to.

I also have a #5 just like this one and I seen last summer a #7 like this that I passed up. Did they make a a full set of these do you know or did they go with every other size? I'm sorry I passed on the #7 now.

I think the Sears catalog shows a 5 and 8 like this but, perhaps, other catalogs included more sizes or CHF made these pans for other than Sears, too.  Don't think I have seen a 7 skillet.  One oddball I had was a size 8 skillet divided somewhat like the Griswold All-in-One Dinner skillet but it had four sections around the perimeter and one circular in the middle.  White porcelain on the inside and a pretty "Master Bake" green on the outside.   Someone at a WAGS convention got that one from me.

Yes Ed, It was marked 87 but these two skillets I have and the other one I seen have a small line in between the 8 and the number. I don't know what this signifies if anything but it is there. I also own 89 deep skillet with cover but the cover (with ears) has the #88 inside . The pan and cover is what I would call shallow hammered. I also, like you own a 999 griddle but mine is nickel plated. I will keep an eye opened for #85 for you

That is strange!  I have one marked 87X. Wonder why the different letters, there are several. You will also see different markings with lines, dots etc.I know what you mean of the shallow and deep hammering, have pieces of both, prefer the deep tho.
