Slant Erie 2 1/2" Logo
« on: December 12, 2006, 03:31:30 PM »
Ok, I've found a slant Erie skillet with the 2 1/2" logo. Just ran it through it's first cycle in the electro soup and realized that that outside of the skillet is nickel plated. Page 21 of the Blue book doesn't give nickel as an "option"...what gives?
Could, WOULD, some have had this skillet nickel plated? Or is it just an omission from the book?

*sigh* It was so gunky when I bought it that I had no idea. Oh well, it is the LIGHTEST #8 I own. Sure won't be the prettiest though!  ;D

The books don't show nor tell all of the story.  Catalog reprints are great to have just to answer some questions like yours.  Griswold offered from the early to mid 1890s up until WWII most of their skillets and many other pieces plated for a slight premium of TWICE the cost of black iron (for the polished pieces).  Probably because of the high price you don't see a lot of plated pieces but they are out there if you look.  Chrome took over during the 1930's from nickel but some nickel was still offered on certain pieces.

Thanks Steve. So, this isn't THAT common

This is one odd pan! Once I get it cleaned up I'll be posting some pictures. The logo it weird, the handle is weird... I dunno. Inside is super smooth, outside is rough... again, I dunno. It's an odd pan, I'll say THAT for it. I think it will end up being one of my favorite users!

Rough on the outside?  That's strange as a plated pan should be polished all over other than the very bottom.  I agree that it's a very unusual (ugly?) looking pan and may have been Griswold's first attempt at designing a pan to use the new slant TM.

OK, here it is. There are so many things "wrong" with this skillet I'd be inclined to think it's a fake. But, why anyone would fake this... I dunno (I find my self say that a lot in regards to this pan LOL!)

Note the grainy texture, this carries through out the entire outside of the pan. Note at the top of the S in Griswold, there appears to be a small circle pressed into the iron

Note the mold boo-boo to the right of "Erie" Note that the 4 in 704B is unevenly spaced.

This picture also shows the grainy texture of the outside of the skillet. Also looks to be uneven where the handle attaches to the body.

Another shot of the handle.

Despite all the other "issues" the inside is smooth as silk. This picture was taken before seasoning.

So... whatcha think? The finish work on this pan is rough, the exterior itself is rough, the logo is kinda wonky, But, it's very light (lighter than my regular slant Erie #8) and super smooth inside.

Bit of an oddball?

Michelle, are you talking about the bump in the center of the cooking surface?
That skillet is certainly not plated.  Griswold had its bad pieces as well as its superbly cast pieces and some eras where the casting wasn't up to par with other eras.  Yours seems espcially roughly cast and I don't know why.  I've had several of those skillets and seen others but don't remember the exact detail so I can compare.  Lots of tiny bumps on your pan.  Bump!

LOL! Thanks Steve!

It sure looked plated when I started to clean it!  Thanks for your response, I really value your input.

Now, I need to get the oddball seasoned and in use!
