Wagner Ware Skillet #8
« on: August 01, 2005, 11:35:27 AM »
I just finished cleaning a skillet. It says WagnerWare  10 1/4 inch skillet  made in the USA and underneath is a #1. It is much heavier than any of the other #8's and does not seem to be as smooth at the other Wagner's. It was in a box of Julie's things and I thought we should clean it while I have the soup going. What can you tell me about this skillet? Janice

Hello Janice, its a klunker. It was made after 1960 or around that time. Its good to cook in but as far as collectibility goes its zilch for now. The quality of Wagner went down when they started making these skillets with the size in inches and all. In my opinion, I think Wagner started putting Made In The USA on their pieces because other countries were rapidly developing and were starting to get in full gear after rebuilding from the devastation of WW 2. During the 50's US production was in its heyday because other countries were in no position to compete because of the war had destroyed totally or set back their production capabilites. So, Wagner wanted to show that it was Made In The USA to set itself apart from those countries who were not able to say Made In The USA, and Wagner wanted to ride the coattails of Americanism which was so prevalant after WW 2. I mean after all, we truly saved the world. Those are my thoughts. I'll bet you didn't expect an answer like that did you. And how about telling Julie Gadgets I said hey?

I kind of looked for an answer like that. I have two #8 skillets in my own usage. One says 10 1/3 with a the letter F, the other one is 10 1/2 with the letter E. They are both nice and smooth and well finished. I was married in 1959 so they would be from that era. No names but they cook good.
I will tell Julie to get on here and talk to you. I have her answering the phone and mailing out catalogs.

Janice, without any other identifying marks, I would not be able to identify them. But, with a picture somebody else might.

Well I am going to start displaying arrowheads etc. today and I hope that Janice doesn''t start cleaning all of them like she did the cast iron. I suppose if she gets really desperate she could start cleaning some horse bits or the sad irons. She told me she wasn't going to let me go to any more auction sales as I bought more. julie
