cast iron kettles
« on: July 17, 2005, 12:51:17 PM »
I have started cleaning the kettles and have found some strange finish on the inside of a couple of them. The one in the soup now is white or what was once white. It was so dirty that when I put it in I could not even see the white. The one I am sending a picture of has a different finish about two inches down from the top. Did some of these kettles have a porcelain finish inside? Janice

Janice, yes, a lot of them had porcelain, inside and out, there are pictures of these in the blue book, I think your mom has a copy of the blue book. Also, some of the Griswold dutch ovens had a coating, finish, glaze, or whatever, on the underside of the lids, making them easy to clean, and they work. Some people don't like that stuff on the underside but it don't bother me. I'd say if it bothers you don't pick it up and look at it. It doesen't affect the value one way or the other, it works, and you can't see it unless you pick it up and stick your face in it, so thats why I'd just as soon it had it as not.
