Part number /catalog number info
« on: December 20, 2019, 07:17:07 AM »
HI
I have recently picked up a Griswold marked waffle iron, it has 3 digit numbers on the 3 pieces .  Is there a resource where these numbers can be used to identify information about the piece ?
Thanks in advance for your help .

Typically the numbers tell what the piece is. Like #8 Waffle Iron, etc. The Red & Blue Books had the known ones at that time listed in them.

The two Schiffer books, The Book of Griswold and Wagner, called the "Blue Book," and The Book of Wagner and Griswold, called the "Red Book," have tables listed for both Griswold pattern numbers and Wagner catalog numbers.

Thanks for the info on the Books , but I guess I was hoping there was somewhere I could access this info on line .  I just dont want to buy a book just to research this one piece .
Possibly someone can help . the casting numbers are
Frame 178
Paddles 171 and 172
It has the griswold logo and # 8 on the paddles and on the frame is "Griswold Erie PA USA .
I am interested in the approx age and of course current restored value .
I will also try to post a pic . I apologize if I can not figure it out, these things sometimes frustrate me but I will try . Thanks in advance for any info .

The best place to estimate the current value of anything is typically by searching completed ebay auctions. Condition dictates value, as well as original intact features. The waffle iron you have has wooden handles. Great care needs to be taken with those. You can’t just throw them in the lye bath to clean the iron. I don’t know how the handles are attached, so I can’t immediately give any feedback on cleaning that piece.
As for finding a free online database, people put time, effort and money into creating the books that list this information. It is not like wikipedia, which is crowd funded donations.
That’s one of the reasons why we encourage people to become dues paying members, to help fund the database of knowledge people here collect and archive.

According to the Blue Book (one of the authors being a WAGS member), the base on the waffle iron should be marked 173, not 178, but it may not be easily read with the level of oxidation on the piece.

Thank you for posting a photo. If you have trouble posting more, just let someone here know. We can post emailed photos if you have issues posting them.

Hammered Griswold is not a common piece to find. Restored, your piece of ‘50's Griswold could be worth several hundred dollars if properly restored. Improperly restored or dirty and rusty examples are worth considerably less. Please take good care of that waffle iron.

Post any more photos, comments, or questions you may have.

HI Russell,  thanks for the reply and further explaining how things work on this site.
I was not trying to circumvent any normal channels, just this piece is very "foreign" to me (I normally only collect Canadian foundered pieces) so I am just trying to better identify it to be able to search and describe it accurately as my searches so far have been largely unproductive.
1/  So you are I am sure correct the frame # is probably a 3.
2/ The handles are not wood , they are a composite/plastic (possibly Bakelite) substance.
3/  I do not plan on a lye bath , just electrolysis to eliminate the surface rust .  And yes the handles will be taken off  :)
4/  You mentioned 50s , so that was helpfull as I though it might be much older , as it has the low base that I understood was designed to be used with a open eye of a cook stove.
5/  Yes I WILL take good care of it . Thanks again for the info ,  Questions I am still going to try to find answers to are ,
When was it made ?
What was  Griswold's sales description
What are the handles made of ?
What was the purpose of the stubby squared off side wings?

I will keep researching .

the numbers only help ID the pan and the books mentioned, will say that this is a hammered waffle iron and nothing more of information.  There are pictures in the books and almost all libraries have these books, so you don't need to buy them for the information that they contain.

These show up on Ebay from time to time, not rare, but also not common. Values are in the 'eye of the beholder' and things that are common sometimes bring high prices because of something unique to that buyer OR rare pieces can be very low because of quality of the item.
