Griswold waffle iron base stand height options
« on: November 12, 2019, 11:49:44 PM »
Hello, this is my first post here, so forgive me if I'm asking silly questions.  I am a bit overwhelmed with the amount of information on this awesome forum.
Anyway, my question is regarding the Griswold #8 waffle makers that I see out there, they come with either a 'Tall' stand, or a 'short' stand.
What are the pros and cons of each?   I would be using it on a gas range.
I tend to think the short stand just seems like you are closer to the flame, so better?  As well as taller stand means more iron to have to keep seasoned, and more place to spill waffle batter!

Thanks for your input.

I know very little about waffle makers but I think the low base were designed to be used on stoves where the stove eye could be removed like a wood or coal stove and you can turn/flip the waffle maker without having to lift out of the stand and the high base stands were designed for more modern cook tops where there is no eye to be removed, the high base allows you to turn/flip the waffle maker without having to lift out of base

I use a low base waffle iron on our gas range. The tall bases, are just too tall for me to use, as they require a higher energy output (gas usage increases and thus cost of operation) to get the paddles hot.  I have however used a tall base rectangular Griswold #1 waffle iron on a gas top with great success.  So you can use both, but you'll waste more gas with the high bases on modern gas cooktops.

FYI, we used a Griswold #18 hearts and star waffle iron last night for dinner.

The high base waffle irons were made for gas stoves, and the short bases were made for wood or coal burning stoves.
A flame closer to the iron is not necessarily better. Depending on the size and shape of the gas stove burner, it may only heat a small ringed area on a waffle iron, which isn't best for vintage pieces.
You can use a low base on a modern rangetop. But you have to pick up the waffle plates and rotate them instead of using the ball joint or whatever type it has to pivot and rotate the iron.
High base waffle irons will be more expensive than low base.
I use vintage waffle irons on glass top stoves. Either base style works fine while wearing insulated oven gloves to handle them. Gas stoves give less heat control, and the shape of the element where gas flames emulate from isn't always the best for cast iron use, especially antique and vintage pieces.

Thanks folks,  I will steer myself towards a tall base model.
