Help identifying dutch oven
« on: October 27, 2019, 10:54:17 AM »
I have had this oven for a while now, most of my iron I can recall all the details (where  acquired, cost)
This one I  can't recall but I like it...Thought maybe Wagner but drip rings are different.
Does bail give a clue?
Any Ideas?
Thanks

Well, that is puzzling.  Great looking oven.

The concentric rings on the top side of the cover say Wagner, but the two underside drip rings not so much.  Are they pointed spikes like Lodge uses?  Or indentations like BS&R used?  Hard to tell from the photo.

Also, the bail handle looks like the one Favorite used with the one end pointing outward to double as a stop so the handle doesn't swing out of control while pouring... may seem rather clumsy, but it does work well.

Just rambling observations.  I assume there are no markings on the bottom of the oven?

They hang down similar to Lodge but round half circles, not pointed.
No markings at all
It is nicely cast, was my bread baking oven until a new friend gifted me with my new bread baker.

Tom, beautiful Dutch Oven, but I do not know.

Every home needs at LEAST two dutch ovens!  Now you can bake bread and cook a pot roast at the same time.  YUM!!

Interesting basting rings on this cover.  Don't believe I've ever seen that.  You'll have to bring it to the next convention... maybe one of the experts there can be more help.

Is it a Renfrow.

Brent,
Was wondering about Renfrow, the lid and oven pictured on the foundries pages doesn't show an oven with a bail and has a different lid dimple pattern. Do you have a marked one you could post pictures of?

Tom, I have a lid that I though was a Renfro, no bottom. I looked at it and you are correct the basting nubs are different more like a starburst pattern. I have tried to post pictures before but I haven't figured out how.

The basting design reminded me of this skillet set from years ago.  It looks like the same patent date on some Wagners.

Brent,
The one on foundry pages has that starburst pattern you have. Usually if you have trouble posting pictures your file is too big. Reduce it to 600x800 or thereabouts and it should work.

Jerry,
Nice looking lid also.
Interesting how we find these pieces that we can't identify.

I think this deep skillet set was listed on Ebay, and thats where I got the pictures.  Also at that time, I think it was listed as a Wagner because it has the same patent date lettering seen on other Wagners.

Pictures of Brent's cover he mentioned in Reply #9.

Clicking on each picture enlarges it somewhat to show more detail.

Brent,
Thanks for those pictures.
Sandy ,
thanks for posting them.
Notice the 4 rings on Brent's lid.
The lid I posted has 5 rings on the lid.
I know that Wagner had a lid similar, how many rings did the Wagner lids have.

I found my books.
I'll answer my own question.
In the Blue book the Wagner Dutch Oven lid  is pictued with 4 rings, the oval roaster with 5 rings. Pg 246
No underside pictures. Darn.
The skillet lid 5 rings. Red Book pg 28

If you look on eBay Wagner has 5 rings on the outside and the concentric jagged circles that when think of Wagner. The Renfro looks like my lid.
