Unique Cast Iron Trivet

I recently came across this cast iron trivet, but have no idea what it was used for. I've never seen one before, and no one else that I have spoken to, can identify it. I have dabbled in the antique business, off and on, for many years. This is the only one I have ever seen. There are no marks or manufacturer's name on the trivet. The bottom has three trivet posts. Can anyone identify this item?

Missing a Cover over rectangular section. Seen a couple of them...Let me dig.
