When looking at the photo it actually looks slightly raised

I see what you mean.  That might explain why both eBay pictures look odd to me.  Doesn't make it make any sense to me in relation to my understanding of the ghosting process.

It seems that it may be fairly easy to find (like a few around each year).  Maybe I can look for one at Larry's museum.

Could someone post those pictures so we don't loose them when the link stops working. This really peaks a guy's interest.

I can see how a mark on a pattern that has been filled can leave either a low or raised mark on the finished product when the pattern is used, It depends on if the filler used was pushed down into the mark or not, Bad example but when applying drywall paste over a nail head, the nail head is below the drywall surface, when the drywall paste is troweled over it the filler can be below the surface resulting in a shallow impression or it can be above the drywall surface resulting in a raised impression and since the mold mark would have been filled by hand it is easy to see how there could be either over filled or not completley filled

Here are a couple pictures from this August, 2018 eBay auction.

The problem I have in thinking through the process is that we start with a pattern with only the 378 marking.  It is cut into the pattern.

The we take that pattern, fill the 378 a little too high, also going through the process of carefully adding the full Griswold markings and logo in the same area.

Griswold was known as a quality foundry.  Pattern makers are highly skilled craftsman.  I have a sneaking hunch that there was likely a final inspection of the master patterns before production, and likely a test run of the production pattern.  Just seems unlikely to be something that accidentally slipped through.

I find it easier to think that the fully marked pan with the raised ghost is the testing of a new master pattern, with the raised numbers intentionally there.

"IF" most of us believe the fully lettered smooth bottom 704's we are seeing with the ghost 378 was made by Griswold, then IMO, they had to have the #378 pattern for that ghost to show up, which means to me that they made the #378 too.....Regardless of whatever reason(s) they used the 378 pattern to make some 704's.

If that is true, then why did they make some 378's?.... is the mystery.

It would be interesting to know.  The more I think about it the more it seems to me that they wanted the 378 to show on the fully marked one.  If we find why they made the plain 378, we may also know why the number shows on the finished pan.

A fun morning.

Based on the Griswold ghost 378's, the design (and the number font/style), and weight similarities, I'm pretty confident that the unmarked 378 is a Griswold.  You may disagree.  Makes me wonder if there are Griswold 377 & 379 ghost marked skillets also.....the search continues!

This may prove to be irrelevant, however, so far, both Griswold ghost 378 skillets have been 704 J's

Jerry,  Do you still have yours (from your original post)?  If so, that is 3 that we know about.....

No, I don't have the 378 from 2005.  I might still have pictures of it.  I'll dig back through my old Computer records and see.

Revision:  I have searched back through my Computer backups to 2000 and I dont have the 378 pictures I posted on here in 2005......sorry!

Jerry, do you recall what you sold your unmarked 378 for back in the day?  That would be a good starting point as far as value  ;)

I recalled the 379 being a #9 size but wasn't sure, my friend got back to me and it is, measures 11 1/4 " diameter.

There is an old thread back in 2009 about the #379.   The thread I started about the #378 was in 2005.
This was a post I made on the 2009, #379 Thread:

I had a 3 digit numbered skillet like that a few years ago.  I posted it on here and also asked Dave Smith about it, but no one could identify it.

Tom, I'm glad you found that 377 picture.  For some reason, I couldn't see any pictures.
