Unmarked Skillet #378
« on: April 16, 2005, 02:17:12 PM »
Does anyone recognize this skillet manufacturer?  Only marking is #378. It is a very thin, lightweight, quality casting. I'd call it a #8 size.....its approx 10 1/4" inside More pictures to follow.

Jerry,
Any size markings or other markings on the back side you didn't show?  The skillets looks like a Griswold to me.  I don't have that pattern number in my list for a skillet so I haven't seen one of these.  Might not be Griswold.

No other markings on the bottom other than what you see in the pix.  #378 and the letter.  Its thin sides and extremely light like the "Erie" skillets, but smooth bottom as you can see......Did Griswold make some unmarked skillets other than the Iron Mountain line?

I have a #8 on handle, (on bottom) 258 (ihr) not Griswold, a heavy casting and the grain is not too bad for a heat ring sk. Just don't know the maker?

Clark,  258 is an Ozark number like John said.   I have a #5 that is marked 255 and is unmarked to whom the maker is.   Glad to see I don't have an orphan.

Found a # 8 (raised on handle) last week w/heat ring and a raised "56" in middle of the bottom. Glass smooth on the inside surface. These are the kind that make you loose sleep at night ??? [smiley=unsure.gif]

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, however, I also have this skillet and am looking for info.  When I did a google search, it only came back with this thread, and an old ebay listing ($$$), suggesting that it was an early, uncatalogued, unmarked Griswold.  Any new updates on this skillet would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you for your time

Interesting!  Maybe these are prototypes, or maybe unmarked and sold at Montgomery Wards....pure speculation on my part, of course.  Still searching for the truth..... :D

Sure would be nice to see some thoughts on what these might be from those more in the know.

Can't add much since I don't collect skillets.

The "ghost" on the old eBay picture sure doesn't look right to me.  Looks more like something that was applied later, after the casting.  I just don't believe that would have left the Griswold foundry with that prominent of a marking.

I think it will take some undiscovered archive with information to accurately determine if it is from Griswold.

One other thought is that it might be an ID for an apprentice pattern maker or molder.  Something that should never have left the foundry.  I still come back to that fully marked pan, the ghost just doesn't look right.

Here is a picture of a Large Logo #13 pattern from Griswold, that they converted to a small logo #13....which they never made. You can see that they filled the old lettering and logo, and Cut a new small logo, size number, and Erie, PA.
I dont know what they used to fill the old information, but would/could that show a shadow if it was used to make the small logo #13???

I think I've had that pattern in my hands.  But, if done properly, you would not be able to see the filled in area.  A master pattern like this would not get much use.  It would be used to make another pattern that would be used to make the actual production patterns.

The ghost in the ebay picture just looks too perfect and too prominent.  Really looks like something put on with a thick marker.  Just strikes me as strange.  Could be just me.

I took several pictures of the #13 pattern several years ago when it hung in an Antique Shop near Knoxville, TN.  I was told the owner of that pattern worked for Griswold at one time, and had it for sale in the shop.  If I remember right, he died and his wife was asking $5000 for it.   I was told it was traded to someone for a set of antique jars. I think it eventually showed up on Ebay.

This is a picture I took last summer at Larry and Marge O'Neil's place.  Think that might be where it ended up.
