Lower end finds from hunt 2/11/17
« on: February 12, 2017, 01:27:07 PM »
[size=12]My final purchase of the day was a 1910-1920 Lodge 10 (C on base) that I got for $35. Very pleased with both the condition of the skillet and the price paid!

And my first purchase of the day from a back room of a lower-end thrift store/antique mall, where I paid $20 for all 5 skillets:

Unmarked smooth bottom Wagner #8 L
Unknown 7 (has unbroken heat ring and may be a Wagner, but the seasoning is too thick for me to judge for certain, at this point)

Unfortunately, the BSR 8 Chicken Fryer---- which I knew was a ‘long shot’ because of the high level of rust, anyway---- had a small hidden crack in the upper half of the sidewall, and the two beside it in the photo (ones showing their full handles) had base cracks underneath all the rust and seasoning.

It was very poorly lighted in the building, and I jumped the gun because of the price she offered them to me for. Lesson learned, though if the 2 clean up to be nice users the purchase was still well worth the money…

Love those old LODGE skillets.  You got a great price for all of them.

I'm with Roger on those old Lodges... I drool just looking at them.  I would have taken that home in a heartbeat.

A long-time collector showed me the best way to find a crack in the rim.  If you run your fingernail around the rim you'll discover it even if you can't see it in the brightest sunlight.  That method has yet to fail me.

Thanks to all for your comments!

Yes, I was very much thrilled to even find the Lodge, much less being able to pick it up at that price.

Thank you for the advice, too, Sandy!
