Promoting Cast Iron Use...
« on: November 10, 2016, 10:45:13 PM »
Many of you reading this already know about the Boy Scouts of America and their use of Dutch ovens while camping...  (I myself became inflicted with Castironitis while helping with the Scouts)... I believe I've found a way to disperse some of my 'Users' by giving them away as raffle prizes at our Monthly District Roundtable Meetings...
I have been serving as Cub Scout Roundtable Commissioner and with NO budget for such things as raffle prizes, useful cast iron hollow-ware has proven a popular attraction!  It started with a CDO that I restored from a Flea Market find and was well received!
I purchased a LODGE BSA Skillet as a prize this month and was extremely pleased that a new scout parent won it!  (I think she was just as happy as I was)...  I believe this not only will help with attendance at future meetings, but will also promote the use of cast iron and the history behind it...  Some of the plain Jane skillets that are hard to sell have been eagerly snatched up too!
Sooo...  I Guess what I'm trying to say is, If you have extra Skillets, Dutch Ovens, ANYTHING that may spark an interest, contact your local Scout Troop or District Rep and see if they would be interested inn 'door prizes' or maybe even a short presentation about CI/Cleaning/Seasoning/ Restoration Etc...
  Just a thought... ;)

Good idea
Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny.

That is excellent.   I had a young man contact me about a set of skillets I had for sale a while back.   Come to find out, he is working towards his eagle scout rank and he wanted to buy them for his troop.   I told him that this set wouldn't be of much help since it had several small skillets.   I would however keep an eye out for some larger skillets and hopefully some dutch ovens.    I have a few number 10's for him.  I hope they really get some use.  :)

I had so many extra unwanted pieces. I posted a for free on CL and a scout master picked them up. I gave him 13 or so pieces.

Very nice.  I donated pieces to a scout troop in TX through here.  Just asked for a letter on letterhead as a receipt for taxes.  :)
