Plated Griswold number 8
« on: May 12, 2016, 09:53:48 PM »
Hi Everyone..  New here from Indiana.

Been cooking with cast iron on camp outs, since I was a kid in the scouts.

Sometimes at home too.

Anyway, I came across this old plated griswold number 8.

It looks like chrome or polished nickel.  I'm trying to find some cleaning information.  If it was a nickel plated lantern fount, I would just use CLR and steel wool.. but since i'm going to be cooking with this, figured I would steer clear of that.

Also, is there something up with the search function?  If I search for chrome, or nickel, or plated.  I get zero results.  I know i just looked at a post here yesterday that was talking about the different types of plating used.

Thanks for the info.

Jim

Hello Jim, and welcome to the WAGS Forum!

Now the searching thing...

The search window to the upper right  will only return searches from the past 30 days, and is pretty worthless. :)

Click on the search TAB (upper left) and then use that window.

Enter your search term in #1
Select "all posts"  #2
Check Display one post per thread  #3

Most times, we need to see pictures, so here is a thread to help you with that, as our Forum requires that picture file sizes must be 350KB or less... so you 'may' need to resize them to be able to attach them. :)

Our Cleaning and Restoration board should be helpful also!

Appears to be Chrome. :)

(great job with picture posting BTW).. ;)

I would clean in a Lye Bath, .... OR yellow cap Easy Off (which is lye) sealed in a plastic bag for several days.

Looks to be in good condition.

Stainless Steel scrubbies and dishwashing liquid for scrub downs.

IF any rust/oxidation needs to be removed, a short soak in 50/50 vinegar bath should do the trick.  :)

Nice pan Jim...  Plating looks to be in better than average shape...  I have an old, plated #7 "ERIE" that gets used regularly... Love it!
