What is the better choice for a new enamled dutch oven or pot?
« on: December 30, 2014, 09:10:41 AM »
I'm thinking of getting a 6 qt or larger enamled oven or pot to do soups, chili, etc.
Won't use it much.
Anyway, Le Creuset is very expensive, but is it worth 4x more that a similar Lodge or Tramontina, which are around $60?

I have been using a Lodge enamel Dutch oven for several years and like it a lot.
As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.

I picked up a Belgian made 10 qt Descoware enameled DO from ebay for about 70 bucks..and I really like it also. I would have gone with Lodge but they don't offer one the size I needed.

I use a 16 quart Granite Ware/Enamel Ware stock pot and a 16 quart heavy bottom stainless steel stock pot, 6-8 quarts is just not enough and a 16 quart cast iron pot would be too heavy to handle, When we make soups and chili we always make enough to put 10-12 quarts up in the freezer or put in canning jars and have enough left for 3-4 meals.
I know that does not help answer your question but with our home it is all about practicality.

I hate saying this but sometimes cast iron is not the only or best option...I know...blasphemy

My Lodge 7.5 qt enameled DO was about $80 tax, title, and license through Wal-mart's site-to-store process. One or two days, local pick-up (if you have a Wal-mart). About a year ago.

Shane, I believe Cook's Illustrated rated the Tramontina equal to the LeCreuset and was also rated the Best Buy of the group of Dutch Ovens.
