Wish me luck!
« on: January 31, 2015, 07:57:36 PM »
Trying to clean my Erie Breadstick Pan. I've been working on it a few hours. Vinegar/water has been used. A rust remover called Naval Jelly Rust Dissolver from
Wal(hell)mart seemed to get one level of rust off and closer to the metal. It is now in the oven on Self-Clean cycle along with a #6 Griswold skillet that has built on gunk(along with a couple of pieces of dog hair). Hoping to be able to put in the oven to season before bed. Wish me luck.

This is my first attempt at trying to clean a really nice piece and that's why I need some luck and good wishes.  :)  :-?  :)

First step should always be to de-gunk/remove old seasoning.
(Lye, oven cleaner, Self Cleaning oven)

Second Step is to de-rust, as none of the methods in Step one will remove oxidation. (50/50 Vinegar Water soaks, checking every 30 minutes, Electrolysis, or evaporust if you choose.)

I'd set that Naval Jelly aside.  I don't recommend it for Cast Iron.

Yep .. I tried it a little(Naval Jelly) ... and I just got an uneasy feeling about it ... I couldn't find Evaporust which is what I went looking for. So .. I'm trying to get the old seasoning off of it in the oven. This summer I'm planning on making a Lye tank in my storage shed.

The Naval Jelly did seem to work get some of the old seasoning off but like I said uneasy feeling so I didn't let it sit on very long.

Dave, Sounds like you are trying to do this as a 1 day job.
Am I right? It took many decades to get like that and it will take a few dayS to bring it back to order. You will be happier with the end result. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
Use the step of order that Cheryl set out.

Thanks Duke.

The pan and skillet are cooling off and I'm ready for bed. I was hoping to get to use the Pre-Gris Erie Breadstick pan to make Jalapeno Poppers for the Super Bowl.  ;D Don't think that's going to happen.

It looks like the self-clean did pretty good but there is a nice film left on top(bottom of pans) and I'm not sure what cooking surfaces look like. Hoping I have enough Vinegar to use tomorrow ... just trying to figure out what to put the mixture in. The wife I'm sure will need the sink. I'm thinking of a pickle bucket but will definitely need more Vinegar for that.
