GRISWOLD #6 SLANT LOGO, SMOOTH BOTTOM, WOOD HANDLED SKILLET
« on: December 18, 2014, 08:35:29 PM »
Greetings to all WAGS members and visitors. Its been a long time since I last posted on this forum. However I recently acquired a somewhat unusual Griswold #6 slant logo, smooth bottom, wood handled cast iron skillet with pattern #698, that may appeal to those interested in this somewhat controversial series. I welcome any information regarding this quizzical pan, and would also like to ascertain if any other #6 slant/smooth series skillets are known to exist. According to the Blue Book, this slant/smooth series of Griswold's were only produced in Nos. 2, 3, 5, 8, & 9 (no reference to a #6). I further gather that the existence of the #3 and #9 in this series is highly questionable. The main controversy stems from the published dating of this run from 1939-1944. Other highly knowledgeable enthusiasts insist that the production time frame was substantially before this period. Also I was wondering how the aspect of its wood handle affects this particular example's overall collector desirability. Unfortunately, try as I might to resize them, I cant seem to grasp the knack of posting forum pictures. However I would be glad to e-mail them to any interested parties. Any information regarding this inquiry would be greatly welcomed and appreciated. Thanks very much and best regards to all.

Thanks Cheryl, however I reset the image mode down to its lowest setting on my camera to take the pictures and the forum template repeatedly rejected them upon attempted insertion. While I'm an avid cast iron junkie, computer technology goes right over my head.

Donald, The smooth bottom slant skillets listed in the book refers to the standard skillets, not the wood handle. All sizes in the BB, including the 3 and 9, were made. A WAGS member has the complete set and I posted pictures of the 3 and 9 on here somewhere. Sorry but I don't remember the thread. A search on 3 slant smooth bottom and 9 slant smooth bottom will probably turn them up. Also FWIW there is a 7 slant smooth bottom in the wood handle series.

Thank you for the info Harry. I was unaware of that sort of differentiation regarding Griswold wood vs. iron handled skillets and how that aspect affects availability and valuation in the Blue Book. Best regards.
