Finished the antique W.C. Davis single spout
« on: October 12, 2014, 12:08:56 PM »
Came out fairly well. This skilet sits FLAT--the heat ring shows little to no wear. The raised letters are defined. Not sure if the roughness is a function of deterioration or the casting. It may be the casting, given the condition of the rest of the skillet which is pretty good, especially given its age, and the size and roughness of the bottom gate on the sides of the gate. I'd put it at between 1848 and 1860, given its construction and what I know about WC Davis. No number on this guy, but I'd say it's about a 6 or 7--closer to the latter. Anyway, I'm happy with it.

Last two photos, closeup of the letters. Headed for the table Monday, wish me luck. Electro, etc. shut down for the year...  :(

Hello Frank. Good luck to you on the 'headed for the table'. It took me awhile to figure that out but I did. I hope all goes well for you.

You did a terrific job on this piece. If you ever want to sell it please keep me in mind.  :)

Was on my way out the door this morning (yep, 4:30AM. Surgeon at 5:30), thought I'd check back. They sure look similar. Two small differences--mine has no number on it at all, and my gate runs top to bottom from the letters and yours runs across. Wonder why, as they were poured one at a time, right? Does yours have the goose neck handle? Can't tell from the photo. Regardless, I'll measure the diameter and report back once I'm on top of things.

Frank,  small world, I am an RN working in surgery dept..  LOL.... it appears ur gate mark runs into the number.  If you look real close, above the  N in cinti...  you can see the bottom aspect of a number...  I bet its a seven.... I bet the top of the mold might have gotten turned and gate mark was poured perpendicular.    And yes, goose neck handle on mine is present.  I will take measurements too.... ttys

Whelp, the knee replacement went well and they tell me I'm way ahead of schedule. The Lord has been with me for sure. Was able to quit the pain killers after 10 days, which I guess is unusual, and the bend in the knee is already at 120 degrees, which they said was 4 weeks early.

Stopped at an estate sale on the way home from the doctor today (2 week check). No cast iron, but it was good to get out.

Bad news is that the bills are starting to come in. I list alot on e-bay, but usually not cast iron, unless they're users or dups. But I'm going to let go of a few other pieces, including this WC Davis and the Erie griddle I showed the before of earlier this year. I haven't listed any cast iron since last year and I truly have no idea what these two pieces are worth. Let me know if you have any interest, as I'd rather see them go to folks who will appreciate them.

Thanks, Susan. I took a look and that's the current bid with over 3 days to go. Let's see what it goes for. A W.C. Davis 11" spider with a lid sold for $225 in the last week. That one had a nice lid with an 1863 patent date, but hadn't been cleaned, not that it matters that much. I can't find any others. So we know it's worth between $30 and $225 at the moment. :)
