Interesting Waffle Iron Turning Device
« on: August 03, 2014, 09:36:23 AM »
Recently picked up a 1930's (my estimate) Swedish waffle iron (AB Skoglund Olson) on eBay.  Haven't cleaned it.

I normally would not have purchased an iron like this as I have many examples.  What caught my eye though is the extra handle at the ball hinge end.

The iron weighs about 8 pounds and is machined flat on the outside.  About 8 3/8 inches in diameter.  It is intended to sit flat on the stove.  Flat topped cast iron stoves for both heating and cooking were/are common in Northern Europe.

Turning a waffle iron of this weight would be a challenge even for someone with forearms like Charles Atlas  ;D.

So, this Swedish company added a nice assist handle.

I've attached a few pictures.

By the way, the design is the traditional heart shaped Scandinavian Dessert Waffle shape.

Some closer views of the handle and my wife holding and turning the iron.

The handle itself is wood held by two cast iron parts held together with a screw.  The device captures the ball hinge and allows easy handling and turning.  This handle also acts as a stop to keep the iron open when pouring batter or removing the waffle.

Many makers made a ring to sit and turn the iron on.  This small part took a lot less iron and cost to produce.  Pretty slick in my mind.

So the handle is removable, it just cradles that ball joint?

It will pop off if you loosen the screw.  I don't think it was made to do that on a regular basis, but it will come off.  It does just cradle the ball.

Indeed, the lettering is stamped.  One of the few examples I've ever see using that technique.

A very nice piece Tom. I like it!! 8-) 8-)
I will get busy tomorrow and conjure up some images of my wire framed German example  we spoke of some time back.
PS I appreciate your assistance with both matters  :);)
In the meantime, here are some images of the full cast iron example from the net.
If it looks like a hijack feel free to remove them or attach to my post tomorrow.
