Yeah that's a beauty, Robert. Been keepin an eye out for one myself. Did you just get that off ebay?..looks familiar. I'd get that rust off pretty soon. Also, I don't believe 2nd series had pattern numbers, Perry..that's a 3rd series Erie. And, see that little notch carved on the handle rib underneath...I have an Erie 8 that has that same notch. Always wondered if that was factory or someone did it later...but now think it must be factory.  I wonder why they did that.

Robert, that Erie is indeed a beauty. I'd say early third series, from my understanding of the Erie pans PDF. I have yet to see one that nice in person that is priced less than $150. Great deal!!

Very nice skillet, Robert.  It should draw a lot of interest on e-bay.  I have Erie first & second series which I cook with regularly, mostly because it is so cool to cook with a skillet made before my Grandmother was born in 1896. ;)

Hello Jim. I share these same thoughts when I am using an old piece of cast iron. I think about those who have used this before me, who bought it new, how many owners has it passed through, how many going away meals has it cooked, even how many sons and daughters ate their last meal from it before they went off to war. I see myself as just a caretaker of the cast iron that I have.

I share your thoughts, Perry, and view myself as the latest in a long line of caretakers.  I recently converted a friend (actually, he asked to borrow one of my freshly cleaned 3 notch Lodge $8s and asked if he could buy it).  Once people learn how great cast iron cooks and how easy it is to clean and maintain they like cooking with it.  I'm hoping one of my younger generation wants to become the caretaker of some pans when my cooking days start to wind down (hopefully many years in the future). ;)
