How do you display your iron?
« on: February 16, 2014, 05:04:36 PM »
BTW, this pertains to your user pieces in the kitchen,  not your prized non-users.
Ok, now that I've acquired a couple DO's and several skillets, I've got a new problem..what to do with them. No room in any cupboards/cabinets and I'd like to display them anyway. I do have an open corner in the kitchen where they could hang, and I drew up a quick sketch of the idea.(I am no artist)  ::)  ;D  But I'd love to see what others have done. Mine is nothing fancy, just a couple boards with a shelf... maybe there's something better I could do. I need more ideas...a pic would be great too! Thanks.  :)

HI Mark, not much help since ours just sits on the stove or in the oven.  But just incase you didnt know, dont store the do's and skillets with the lids on them as they will rust inside.

Hi Tony, yeah, that's where mine are now too..on and in the stove. Better half not liking that arrangement too much, lol. And I found out not to store with lids on...no rust, but can get an odor I don't care for. I put the lids on upside down and askew so air can circulate..that seems to be working.

Mark, I have too many users to display.  Mine are stacked in cabinets, stacked in the garage, stacked in the basement and, like the others, stacked on to stovetop (taking them out of the oven and putting them back in was too much work so I just left them on the stovetop).  My wife is not too crazy about the stovetop storage, but she doesn't cook and I do so we have reached a comfortable equilibrium ... for the moment at least. ;)

2' x 6' Gridwall.  Planning a larger  section on another wall.

[size=12]Mark,

I'm glad you brought this subject back up.  I too have been pondering ways to display my CI 'users', the problem is space!  I only have 'users' with the most often being stored in cabinet.  I have found that some of the newer wire racks found at local 'mart' stores are ok, but they only hold 4 larger items (grill, skillet, etc.) and sitting on counter next to stove, takes more space than I want and they only are available in one size.  (That I know of).

I've been thinking about making a modern skillet holder...  just need time...

I also would like to see/hear how others store their 'users'... I like the 'grid" idea...

BTW-Popsicle sticks are used to keep air gap for my DOs...

Yes, Neal's grid setup seems to work good..I wonder if there is a matching shelf unit that hooks on the grid for DO's and lids and such.
Neal, is that from Home Depot, or Lowe's?
I didn't realize this subject had been discussed before, a search didn't come up with much, but turns out it has in the old forum. Cheryl sent me some links..gotta see if I can get in there. Thanks, Cheryl.  [smiley=banana-wave.gif]

Meanwhile, keep them coming....maybe the new forum could use this discussion?  [smiley=dankk2.gif]

Gridwall is a brandname.  I bought used panels locally (cragislist) an dfound my Gridwall hangers/hooks/ vendor through google.  I think there are some shelf units available, or you could cut down a panel, use connectors to make a hinged back support, and heavy wire from the front edge angling back and up to the gridwall panel.
Best Regards,
Neal

Ihave alot of BSR and some MSR on Bakers Rack in spare B/rm. And more BSR out in Garage along with other brands of C.I. in boxes higher my head and about 15 ft long on steel shelving. Honeybiscuit keeps asking me what she gona do w/ all that C.I. when I die? I said sell it. I have it all washed and reseasoned. Every piece I git I run er thru the vat, wash, dry er at 200 Deg for 2o mins. to git all moisture out and season the hound out of er. Let it sit in oven till cool and inventory er and put paper towel on it and store in box in garage.

Wow, that's a lot of iron Bobby...umm..how much longer till ya think Honeybiscuit will be sellin it off, rofl. just kiddin ya!  :D
Don't you keep any in the kitchen to cook with?

I just spent a couple hours going through a dozen or so links from the old forum that Cheryl sent me. Man you guys got a LOT of iron! Nicely displayed too. I don't *think* I'll ever come close to what some of you have. And I'll bet it would cost you all many times the prices you paid, to amass collections like that today. One that stuck in my mind is Mark Ritter...holy cow!   [smiley=eek2.gif] [smiley=drool1.gif]
Just the 2 huge side by side oval roasters I saw are prob worth 800 apiece or more on ebay today.  God only knows what that huge collection of vintage iron would fetch at todays prices. And that pic was from '09! He prob has more now.
Mark, if you're reading this.. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
Here's the old forum link if you haven't seen it:

But still haven't seen a whole lot for a corner display..except for Neals gridwall...that could work.
Still welcoming ideas... 8-)

That's a nice setup Tim...unfortunately I doubt it would work for me. Sheetrock walls and ceiling..there wont be a stud where I need it both ways in the ceiling.  SWMBO, She Who Must Be Obeyed, ( I stole that from someone from those old forum threads, lol) has given me that one kitchen corner to use and that's it.  ::) ;D

I use one of those fake skillet racks.   ;D  It was cheap and it works for me.  It's a little overloaded, but what the heck.  It it fits in the corner.

I've seen those on ebay, Roger. Maybe in the future I'll need one for overspill, lol,  but for now I need something for the skillets and DO's too. Awesome set of users though!  :)

Thanks Mark for the complement, but I assure you that there are alot of members here that have much nicer collections than I do. Glad you enjoyed seeing some of mine.

thanks mark.  the hooks i used are actually made to go into just the drywall.  they are not mounted to a stud.  each hook holds up to 10 pounds i believe.  it's why i had them spaced further apart.
