Two items you might find interesting
« on: February 27, 2014, 03:49:49 PM »
Here is a couple of pieces from two very old foundries out of the Old Country.
They are my  9 inch Cannon. Its an amputee but that wont hold it back from serving well in the kitchen.
And my 12 inch J & J Siddons skillet/pan.

Both are quite old and bottom gated. Luv it

Here are images showing the set up I used in the electrolysis bath.
Then images it as it arrived.
The seller had attempted to clean with a rotary wire brush---wrong!
I know they will do this in an attempt to present the item well and maximise their return but it just hinders any restoration.
I would have paid the same money for it with the baked-on accumulated fat/food/grime mix :)

My 12 inch J & J Siddons skillet/pan.
This has been cleaned in the electro and will stay that way until I fabricate a handle to suit. I hope to be able to replicate it to a close degree.
The base has done some work and is somewhat topographical from use. I don't see this as a problem as it is flat; also there is plenty of meat in this casting ;D
The "Hilltop" part of the address can still be seen.

That's some great looking iron there, James. Thank you for posting. Nice clean up!  Did you ever figure out the "Albatross" origin? Just curious. Did see a few sold on e-bay.

Hi Jim and thank you for the praise.
Do you still have links to the auctions or are they well expired?
No I never did find out any more even after much digging. The boys on COCIA were unable to provide much more either. At this point it would appear that the 'Albatross' is somewhat of an enigma.
I would welcome any snippets( or larger pieces ;)) of information on this particular marque. If anyone can assist in any way, be it listings or historical links, please PM me, post here on this thread or on the COCIA site http://www.aussiecampovenforum.com

Many thanks

Didn't know if perhaps this logo is close?

You beauty Jim!
Yes, that is the logo. It is a nice pot but no lid. Not ideal but I am sure one could be found to fulfill the purpose.
The cast quality and finish on my example exceeds any others I have and I am sure that would be true of all Albatross pots  -- true artisans.

Jim F, you are too fast.  I was going to point you to a picture of the same pot in the new cast iron book on page 64.  It says 1960-1990, but I think it is likely 1860-1890.

Beautiful work James!

Beautiful work James!

Thank you for the commendation. I am pleased with the results and they will only improve with use.
My oversight; the handled pot next to the Cannon in the initial post is a Cousances  #22. The handle still has to be attached.
