What is your Favorite Dutch Oven to cook with?
« on: January 15, 2014, 05:55:09 PM »
Sounds good. Before this one goes, let me ask you and others:
What's your favorite dutch oven to cook in.
Maybe I should expand my search beyond Griswold.
Lodge seem to be popular, Wapak, Favorite, Wagner Ware?
I just want an all purpose DO, size 9 or 10, that isn't junk, and kind of vintage. Thanks.

I have 2 Griswolds sizes 8 and 9
1 Wagner Round Roaster size 9
2 Lodge Vintage in sizes 10 and 12

The DO's most often used in my home are the Lodge. They are not as smooth as the Wagner or Griswold but nevertheless great DO's for cooking. If you want a really smooth surface then I would recommend the Wagner. You can get one for about 1/2 the price of a Griswold and IMHO the quality is the same. I use my DO's all the time and all of them are nonstick and do a great job. The Lodges are thicker and heavier than the Wags and Gris.

Thanks for that Nick. It' not the first time I've heard that opinion about Lodge DO's. I'm curious..why do you prefer cooking in those over your Griswold's?

I have a Wagner (Sidney O) Round Roaster 7 (it's my only DO) but I do love it, the inside is so smooth it's like butter and even when I over cook things (which is rare) it wipes right out no problems, I think that comes from good seasoning. I would like a larger one but they are always a little too pricy for my taste - I'm a user not a collector

I know what you mean about price Andrew. I'm probably about to spend 200 bucks on a dutch oven and if my wife finds out she's gonna hit me over the head with it.  :D
Thanks for your opinion on the wagner. I'll see what's out there.

How about this Dodge here. Wish the pics were better, but looks to me like it might clean up ok. And see if you think the bail looks bent or not. I don't know much about Dodge. Does 12" mean this be a #10?

:-? You would really? But but but I thought the old cast was far superior to the new stuff. I've read that a few times here even.  They do look nice tho..

I just checked the link...it says the L10DO3 weighs 34 lbs and the L12DO3 weighs 47lbs!
Is that correct or a misprint?

Mark, the Lodge in the ebay listing you posted, I would consider to be a newer Lodge 1993 to present....based on the poorly visible logo style.  Now, possibly, one of the Lodge experts will stop by and correct me if I am mistaken.... :)  So my response was based on that premise.

Now I have a 1960's era #8 Lodge DO that I keep for a user, and an itty bitty #5 Lodge DO from that same time frame that I also use.
I also have a non-Collector quality Griswold Iron Mountain #8 DO that I plan on using.  "Plan on" being the operative words...

My Griswold DO's are collector quality, so I will display them prettily!  That is my viewpoint, other's here use them ne way!  ;)

My problem has been, that I have been so busy hunting the iron, and cleaning the iron and learning about Cast Iron.... I have not cooked with it as much as I should... heck, who has time for cooking food???  :D
(PS... I have hated my itty bitty, can't function in it, kitchen for a long time... so I go on strike quite often...) ::)
I use my skillets and griddles, and some other pieces much more often.

So I defer to others on DO using experiences! :)

Hey Mark, I couldn't get Ktom's site to come up for some reason, maybe there're doing work on it. But, I got a Lodge 14" deep camp oven and I think it only weighs about 35 lbs. So, that must be a misprint for the 10"and 12". I have cooked in several of the older camp ovens of different manufactures. I also have older Lodge camp ovens along with very new ones. I have much better luck with Lodge because of their thickness, lid and leg design. I don't see any difference in cooking between old and new Lodge. Their factory seasoning is very well done. I bought a new Lodge 12" deep skillet last year. Made a pineapple upside down cake right out of the box, just rinsed with cold water. The cake fell out perfectly, no sticking which is pretty good with all that brown sugar and pineapple syrup. The new Lodge might be collectors but they are dandy users.

Thanks Cheryl, Ya know it's funny.. those new Dodge Logic DO's were what I liked the best and almost bought one on ebay almost 2 weeks ago...the day I was craving pot roast. Then as I browsed and read about the older ones for sale, I got curious and started reading and researching..probably 20 hours worth by now, and it's what landed me here also. I can feel the bite of vintage iron already..it just has more character and history. But I'm finding the larger ones like I want, even pitted and rusty, are hitting 150.-200. at that last minute frenzy. Collector quality, many hundreds more. Maybe you're right..I want one NOW for cooking.  I can put the money saved towards my first decent vintage piece..and have my pot roast a lot quicker.  :P These week long auctions are a pain in the butt, only to lose in the end anyway. Just funny how this has come full circle..I'll probably end up getting the same new Dodge I could have 10 days ago! I'm gonna give it 2 more days, there's a few Griswolds I'm watching that I plan to bid on. If that doesn't pan out, I'm going with the new Dodge. Thanks for the link. :) ;)

Hi Steve, I called them and turns out those weights listed are way off. Maybe it's down while they correct it? The correct weights are 18lbs for the L10 and 23 lbs for the L12
Anyway, thanks a lot for responding. I was hoping to hear from someone that owns, uses and likes them.   ;)

Some of the comparisons in this thread are comparing apple and oranges. Comparing newer Lodge to old Griswold and Wagner is not an accurate comparison. Comparing older Lodge with older Griswold, Wagner, BS&R, Martin, etc, you will find the same thing, thin, smooth castings. Thin smooth castings is a era, not a brand. Up to the 1950's all DOs were very much alike. Why? They all had to do what the competition was doing, or their product wouldn't sell. So if you find a thinly, smooth cast DO it is older. Fast forward to today and Lodge. The castings are thicker and rougher. Does that affect the use of the DO? Not one iota. That roast will cook the same in a modern, heavy, rough cast Lodge as it would in the most expensive Griswold DO you could find. If you are looking for just a great user, the Lodge will will be a choice. If you are looking for a collector piece look for the older pieces.
Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny.

Thanks Dwayne, That's pretty much the conclusion I've come to also. My problem is I can't always tell a new piece from an old one just by a picture.. yet.  Thankfully there are experts here who can.  8-)

I must have misread that, my apologies, this site is just getting up and running so they are constantly adding more stuff sometimes 3-4 times a day and their prices are really reasonable having compared them with some others on ebay and private sites.

Katom is definitely the way to go. I purchased several Lodge items from them, good prices and even better sales, fast safe shipping, too

Thanks Stuart..I might buy a smaller Lodge DO from them in the future. Or if I'm not happy with the Griswold I just bought on ebay and send it back, I'm done with them and will get a new Dodge from Katom.

Hello to all . This is my first post but I have read the forums for a while now .I just had to join :) .My favorite Dutch Oven is a Griswold ERIE No 3 781 PATD mar.10.91.Found it in a second hand shop about a month ago. It was so crusty on the bottom the shop owner could not read what was on it. I could see gris and an e so I thought I knew what it was took a chance. He also had a GSW cast iron pan that was made in Guelph Ontario that I was going to purchase so I said give me a good price on the Dutch Oven and I will buy both . 15 bucks each .Now im hooked .
